Pick of the Week Podcast

Pick of the Week #296 – Severed #1

Show Notes

A bizarre obsession with hobos and movie stills takes over the podcast this week as Josh Flanagan, Conor Kilpatrick, and Ron Richards spent most of their time in the early 1900s for this week thanks to some great comic books and graphic novels. Oh, and no sports!

00:01:45 – Scott Snyder’s creator owned book from Image, Severed #1 gets Conor’s Pick for this week.

00:11:05 – Greg Rucka’s take on The Punisher #1 was fantastic but the art fell a little short for everyone.

00:18:09 – The new Terry Moore series started with Rachel Rising #1 and everyone checked it out.
00:20:58 – The fun doesn’t stop with DC Retroactive 1980s: The Flash and Conor and Ron loved it.

  • E-Mail us at contact@ifanboy.com with any questions, comments or anything that may be on your mind.

Please don't forget to leave your name and where you're writing from and each week, we'll pick the best e-mails to include on the podcast!

  2. Got it downloaded and ready!

  3. Have none of the iFanboys seen The Middle Man TV show?

  4. how could you not talk about secret six it had the most pow’s

  5. @jmack None of them read it. What could they have to say about it?

  6. @jmack  They don’t read it. They did talk about it in a video show though.

@Isaac: Misfits is good. When I was a kid I loved The Ripping Friends. That’s kinda superhero-ish lol.

  7. We can talk about how much AJ Burnett sucks if you want connor.  Only two more years of him

  8. The Vaccines intro’ing. Oh, another good choice Ifanboys.

    Comics what?

  9. Misfits is awesome. This episode was as well.

Oh and Ron, you can say “black”. And latino is preferred over hispanic as well.

  10. Unbreakable.

  11. sweet tooth was beautiiful this week shame there was no time for it. lemire water colored his art

  12. Hey Josh.  Not to be that guy, but there are a LOT of lighthouses on the great lakes.

The air conditioner bit?  It was funny even though Connor and Ron didn’t laugh.  🙂

  13. @Doughboy  No shit. Hey, now I know. I got all possessive with my lighthouses.

  14. you were born in a lighthouse weren’t you josh?

  15. Mystery Men is -technically- based on a comic, but from what I can tell I think only the Shoveler wasn’t created for the movie. They were created by the same guy who did (and may have actually been supporting characters of) The Flaming Carrot.

  16. Love the Wonder Man reference. Keep up the great work, guys.

  17. what was that TV show were Jerry O’Connel got superpowers. he could float but had to use aerosol cans to fly around?

  18. Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    @edward  My Secret Identity

  19. Awww I was hoping ya’ll would talk about Mystic # 1 🙁 Looks like I’m writing a review for #2? 🙂

  20. Automan!

  21. @PaulMontgomery  good times

  22. Man, listening to Ron talk about The Infinite makes me feel like he’s gonna make it the pick soon…

  23. Red Skull #2 is still my pick of the week. Talk about a near perfect book start to finish. Just feels like you’re reading something important.

  24. And now the theme from The Greatest American Hero is stuck in my head.

Have to disagree slightly with the call on Hex.  In my opinion, the dream sequence was the only way they could “kill” Hex and say goodbye to the current continuity and still have him prepped and ready for All Star Western in September.  Still, I’ll definitely agree that the art change was irritating and I would rather have had a victory lap with Jordi Bernet.

  25. Hex was a good book but not what I would call great. I thought the previous issue was a stronger book than this one.

  26. Isaac here!

    A) I love both “The Incredibles” and “Darkman.”  Even “M.A.N.T.I.S.” had its moments.   i just structured that sentence poorly.  Also, in addition to being the best “Fantastic Four” movie, “Incredibles” is also the best adaptation of “Watchmen” so far.

    B)  “Mystery Man” was actually based on characters from Bob Burden’s “Flaming Carrot Comics.”  I distinctly remember being disappointed that the movie wasn’t going to feature The Flaming Carrot himself.

Thanks for reading my e-mail on the show!

  27. Hey, After reading the review and hearing the podcast, wasn’t the young prodigy(in Severed) running away to connect up with his father and play  via a letter he was reading on the train?

  28. @olivertwist – yes.  and I was wondering if somehow this was a letter from Porter to lure him?  Hope they don’t make Porter his father, that would be lame.

  29. as far as the TV shows and movies….watching a documentary on HBO called “Superheroes” about people who believe they are real life superheroes. Its fascinating. Cool graphics too.

Just sa them at Lolla and they F’ing rocked!

  31. re the polybagging of Ultimate Fallout #4, I did not assume that had anything to do with collectibility.  Rather, I assumed that it was to force any looky-loos whose interest had been piqued by the new coverage to actually buy the issue if they wanted to read the story.  Particularly given that it was just 7 or 8 pages, it’d be pretty easy for someone to flip through and say “oh, yep, Spidey’s black but not much happens, got it.”  The clear polybagging seemed consistent with the randomly polybagged Jonah Hex issue that came out when the movie did, rather than the more obviously “collectible” polybags from the recent Fantastic Four and Ultimate Spiderman deaths.  Just a thought.
