Isn’t the description here the same as Issue #6? Doesn’t really matter, I jumped on last issue and now I am in for the ride.
Me too. I went out and bought all the back issues as well.
Welcome to the party guys! Glad to see more people picking this up. Brubaker is awesome at writing kick-ass espionage with a side of pulp. This book is fantastic, and the ante really went up after last issue.
Anyone getting both Cap and this book think Brubaker writes a better Bucky?
Agreed.
Way better.
The latest arc on Cap seems to be a significant improvement though.
I’ve been saying this for a year now! You are totally right! Right now he’s trying to make Cap an espionage hero and it just doesn’t fit with Steve back as Cap.
He is the PERFECT writer for Bucky but what we’re finding out is he isn’t a great Steve Rogers writer. No disrespect to Brubaker, he’s a doing a fantastic job on Winter Solider, Steve just isn’t his sweet-spot.
@jpriester73: Steve was certainly his sweet spot for the first 25 issues of CAPTAIN AMERICA. Sometimes you just run out of stories to tell about a character.
@Conor: I loved those issues as well (those and the civil war graphic novels were my first introduction to comics). If I remember correctly the first 15 books were about Steve looking for the mysterious Winter Solider and the last few were Civil war driven. IMHO Steve the character wasn’t nearly as interesting as the mysterious plot Brubaker masterfully put together. Those books had a much darker feel than a typical Steve Rogers story (I’ve read from Cap 300 to current since Brubaker got me hooked).
Thanks for being so active in commenting on the pages btw. It’s a ton of fun to see the podcast trio so involved throughout the website you guys run.
He writes a great Steve.
It just happens that he writes an excellent Bucky.
We have few modern writers to compare his Bucky-voice to, so to us he IS the voice of Bucky.
But we got that through him validating Bucky to us from Steve’s POV.
As an Army brat with a taste for espionage and crime novels and impeccable taste in old Captain America stories, Brubaker was practically born to be the best candidate for bringing Bucky back for future generations of Merry Marvel Marchers.
He’s done a masterly job with both character in a variety of colorations (spy-fi, homage, war story, 70s over-the-top campiness, etc.). It’s been very educational and thoroughly entertaining to watch this guy play with and reinvent this group of action figures from the giant House of Ideas toychest.
This is one of the best comic books on the stands. Superlative.
The work that @bettieb did in the last issue was some of the best color work I’ve seen this year.
I’m actually thinking about droping Cap and just reading this.
I dropped Captain America a couple months ago, but am digging this.
This book quietly gets better and better. I think Lark on art helps, not that Guice was bad. Lark is just a little cleaner and straightforward, which helps since the story itself is about espionage and plot twists.
i agree with you, i bought this at issue one not knowing what to expect and i have enjoyed it. very well written.
I’m am really enjoying this book. Seven issues in and I think this is comparing to those first 25 issues of Cap. The art especially stood out for me in the issue.
Great issue. This book is just a lot of fun, the highway action sequence was amazing, Lark and Breitweiser killed it. I also really like Leo as a villian, he is pretty amibitious, and doesn’t pull any punches. I’m stoked to see how this all plays out, definitely one of my favorite books right now.
