  1. Something occurred to me while looking at this cover.  "Grim and Gritty" is a very old concept/theme in comics.  The Laughing Mask was a very violent character, dealing out street-level justice on mobsters & the like with blazing twin .45s.  Even Superman was taking on mobsters in violent manner in his early adventures.

Of course the grim ‘n’ gritty stories from the late 30’s through the early 50’s were dealing mainly with organized crime that was extremely vital in the wake of prohibition.  Not sure what the grim ‘n’ gritty was in response to in the ’90s?  The mullet?

  2. Seemed like JMS was off his game this issue, it was still good, but not great like most of his work. If I didn’t know better I’d say he had a ghost writer on this … it just didn’t seem like his work at all. It was … average, and usually his writing is WAY above average (in my opinion).

It just seems like the pace has slowed RIGHT down, almost to a halt, and hardly anything happened in this issue. But, I have faith in JMS to return to his A-game next issue.
