  1. It’s a huge shame that this didn’t come out in a hardcover format to match up with the Starman Omnibus books. That said it’s a super price for one of the best mini (maxi?) series in recent memory, with an array of amazing artists, and a good reminder of what DC comics was before all this new 52 junk.

    • Umm… the Shade mini was part of the new 52.

    • DC have released soft-cover editions of the omnibus books as well so they would match with this bad boy!

Got the whole set when it was coming out, really good shame the sales weren’t very good. Which means we’ve got a long wait until we see the Shade again!

    • @gobo

Only superficially, and a lot of things The Shade introduces contradicts facts about the New 52 (super-heroes in the 30s/40s in particular) not to mention Starman’s whole history is up in the air as a result of new 52.

It may have had the New 52 branding, but it certainly didn’t try very hard to make sense in the New 52 framework. And frankly its a lot better for that.

    • @gobo – While it may have been released under the New 52 banner it was written far in advance of that initiative and has no ties to the current mess that is DC. The only continuity is acknowledges is the previous Starman one which is completely embedded in the old DCU.

    • @TheAdventurer & davidtobin100: Did you guys miss when The Shade faced off against the new Deathstroke in, I think, the second issue?

    • @Conor

Like I said.. superficial. That change felt so… pointless, especially as the series rolled onward. It did nothing to make it any more or less tied to the rules of the New 52. It could have been the old Deathstroke (and in fact was, until the New 52 forced Robinson to change the script a bit to make it fit. The comic had been in the works for a while you see) for all the difference it meant.

    • @TheAdventurer: I know how long the series was in the works and that it had to be altered due to The New 52 reboot, but to say that, as davidtobin100 did, ” The only continuity is acknowledges is the previous Starman one which is completely embedded in the old DCU” is inaccurate.

    • Accurate enough. Since any changes were only on the surface.

    • @TheAdventurer: Well, no. Surface changes or not, it was squarely in The New 52. Like it or don’t, but that’s a fact. At the end of the day it does nothing to effect the story.

    • That’s what we’re saying.

    • No one is saying this isn’t in The New 52. Of course it’s officially in The New 52. Everyone DC publishes is in the DCnU unless otherwise stated. Some stuff, like this and Batman Inc, just doesn’t fit as well. It’s ridiculous to say this is “squarely in The New 52,” it’s more awkwardly mashed into The New 52.

    • @TheAnti-Ronitor: ” It’s ridiculous to say this is “squarely in The New 52,” it’s more awkwardly mashed into The New 52.”

It’s not ridiculous because it is so.

“No one is saying this isn’t in The New 52.”

Incorrect again. Read the comments in the thread above you.

    • You’re being pedantic.

Yes, it’s in The New 52.

No, it doesn’t fit very well there.

    • @TheAnti-Ronitor: It’s hard not to be when people say things that are factually incorrect.

    • A lot of stuff in the New 52 hasn’t changed much at all. But why should that stop anyone from complaining about it?

  2. Caught wind of Shade late and couldn’t find the back issues. Looking forward to it big-time.

  3. Feel like the IFanboys loved this? I don’t even know who the Shade is but I’m going to give it a shot.

  4. Any news if this might be released in hardcover?

  5. I can’t wait to finally read this story.

  6. All in all a great story, it’s just a shame it didn’t come out a year earlier ast fits better with the old continuity. Would love to see the vampire lass again.

  7. This should be great and it’s already on the way to me…

I missed the boat on the Starman Omnibus hardcovers but am getting the trades as they’re released (Vol 3 anytime now). Any harm in reading this before finishing the Starman run or should it go in my stack until the Starman trades wrap up?

    • It doesn’t give away too much of the Starman story but knowing those stories definitely makes it a more meaningful and complete read. I’d say read it when you get it, enjoy it for what it is, and once you have all the Starman omnibuses re-read it and you’ll get even more from it.

  8. Thanks, just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t ruin anything major…

  9. I like that it’s in “The New 52”. There’s potential for the non-U.S. characters. I’m just glad that Robinson (along with a handful of fantastic artists) added to his still elite Starman run.
