  1. Really can’t wait for this. It’s probably my favourite new book of the year.

    • Agreed. Best new series this year hands down.

    • I love this series, but it doesn’t compare to Saga or Manhattan Projects, those are sheer brilliance and originality. Saucer Country is great too though.

    • I’d go Saucer Country, Manhattan Projects, Conan/Saga tie.

    • I love Saga and Manhattan Projects too but this was such a surprise hit for me that it’s become my favourite. I’d never read any Paul Cornell before (that I know of) and the subject matter didn’t really grab me on the first solicit (I’m not a fan of alien stories) so it’s really amazing how much I love this. If it continues the way it’s started this could creep into my long list of best comics ever. I really hope this gets a good long run. I’m glad there’s at least one Vertigo title to replace all the ones that have ended recently or are ending soon (RIP DMZ, Northlanders, Scalped, Sweet Tooth etc).

Also, yes, cover of the week.

  2. It’s growing on me. I think I really like it.

  3. AH! Killer Gigantic Rabbits! This is going to be a messed up issue isn’t it?

  4. I’ve been enjoying it so far, however in the can’t miss podcast, Cornell spoke about all the research he did on New Mexico, and so far i haven’t seen any of it. It really looks like generic locale’s and characterizations. So many missed opportunities with local speech, buildings and specificity. Hoping the writing and art start to take advantage of the setting a bit more.

Story is pretty cool though….lets see where the 3rd issue goes…

    • i think one of the reasons there hasn’t been much local dialogue so far is that the main characters are pretty much all involved in politics in one way or another and a lot of politicians train local colloquialisms out of their speech patterns and vocabulary.

    • Thats never stopped anyone from Texas. haha. Seriously though, i just feel that 2 issues in this could take place anywhere between the High Desert of California to anywhere in Texas. Its just a very generic southwestern environment, and i was expecting a bit more specific local-ness due to to the fact that the location is an integral part of the story.

To be fair though, New Mexico is used a lot in comics nowadays and they always just draw it like monument valley in Utah and use that generic Arizona style cactus as a catch all.

    • Haha thats true. Also based on Kelly’s work on Local and the lengths he went to in that book to accurately recreate locales you would think this one would have a little more local character. The more I think about it the more I agree with you. Hopefully it’ll increase in subsequent issues.

  5. Saga, Manhattan Projects, Saucer Country: a good week for non-super hero comics.

    • I agree, and isn’t it great that these titles are also really popular. This one a little less so, but it gets a decent amount of pulls for a Vertigo book about aliens and politics.

  6. Cover if the week.

  7. I get my comics in one big shipment at the end of each month so I just got around to reading Issue 2 but I liked it a lot. Just hope it stays consistent I thought Cornell’s run on Action Comics started off amazing and then took a nose dive. Obviously this is a much different book but still …

  8. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! 5/5, POTW etc!

  9. I love the nods to UFOlogy and some of the personalities within it, the groups, the secrets. Feels quite well researched. The psychiatrist leading the patient is very controversial within the UFO field. Nice touches!

  10. Great story. Compelling and rich.

  11. Good stuff. Solid. Hopefully it’s smoldering into a burn…I’m enjoying the whimsy of the characters and the heaviness of the consequence of action…or lack of…it works well.
