  1. It’s about time. This is the first Hellboy series I’ve ever read and I couldn’t be more pleased.

  2. Yeah it is about fucking time!

Guess Mignola was busy counting/swimming in his money from Hellboy 2. Finally we get to see where this story is gonna go. Excuse me I need to read the previous four issues cause I don’t remember anything about this.

  3. This, Darkness Falls, and Crooked Man are the only Hellboy arcs I’ve read.  What other ones should I pick up?  Any essentials for this current story?

  4. @TNC: tere was always a planned break between issues 4 and 5.

@Cutty: That’s a good question. I don’t really think any story is essential to this one but i would suggest picking up the Wake the Devil trade, that’s an awesome story. I don’t think the art have ever looked better than it did in the Conqueror Worm trade though

  5. @edward: I know. But it’s made me care so little about this issue that I desperately need to re-read the previous four. Absolutely no idea what happened before this.

But then I remember this series gets a constant ‘5/5’ for me so I guess it’s not too bad.

@TNC – Try not to whine so much about the planned hiatus. You had plenty of other books to read during the break. It’s one of the best books out there right now, and if they need a break to work on the art for this and the scripts for all the other great Hellboy related projects, that’s more than fine.

Moral of the story? Fan entitlement issues are silly and make the comics community look bad.

  7. @Paul: But stuff like Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk is okay to bitch about?

Listen I love this story. I really do, I gave it 5/5’s a good bunch of times. It’s just that any flow this comic had has certainly been lost because of the hitaus. Planned or not they should’ve had a gameplan going in that the readers might not see the bloody conclusion until the second half of the year.

  8. I need to go dig up issues 1-4, so I can remind myself what is happening in this arc.

@Cutty – What Edward said. If you have the scrilla to finance the purchase I would suggest you pick up the Hellboy Library Edition.  It is beautiful.

  9. @Paul: Plus you can defend the move all you want. The fact of the matter is that this got delayed for a long time. The excitement of this entire story has died off and I bet you 9/10 times people don’t actually remember what happened in this.

You wanna still love it that’s fine. I still love this too, I don’t wanna sound like I hate this mini. It’s pure Hellboy gold! But you can’t defend a long hitaus like this.

  10. @TNC – I think the difference here (if I understand the situation) is that we were told that there would be a delay, but with Wolvy vs. Hulk people were left hanging with little or no info.  That doesn’t mean I condone this practice. I would prefer it if they presented the story in a monthly format (or as an OGN), but stuff happens. ["No plan survives contact with the enemy." – Helmuth the Elder]

@Paul – I think consumers have a right to voice their complaints if they don’t like the way a product they purchase is being produced.  The single best way to make their voices heard is the stop buying it.  I agree that posting comments on a website (or protesting in the "real world") won’t generally have any discernable effect.

The last issue ended on a cliffhanger. It’s not so much different than the season finale of a TV show. You have the issues. If you need to, look back and refresh. If they were 5 star books (and they were) it won’t be a chore to revisit them.

  12. This issue did not end on a cliffhanger. It ended like anyother issue of the mini. Some shit went down and Hellboy went out to get the the lady healthy.

Okay maybe that sounds like a cliffhanger. But how do extinguish a ‘cliffover’ of issue #4 with what happened when #1 ended? They’re the same thing! This just ended suddenly and then Mignola stated: "Hey your gonna wait 6 months for the resolution. Yeah let’s see Marvel or DC do that and see what happens to the fanbase.

  13. Hellboy and BPRD in the same week?

    MAYHEM!!!

  14. and I just typed ‘cliffover

  15. @TNC: those are some weak-arse straws you’re clutching at

  16. Glad im not the only one that forgot what happened in the last ones, all i remember was a hunting party and i think hellboy fought a giant. Oh well looks like ive got some extra reading to do.

  17. Big surprise, TNC is bitching again and his arguement, as always, is weak!  Be more positive man, I guarantee you’ll be better off that way.

And now, the point of my post.  I can’t wait for this trade to drop.  Even if it doesn’t keep it’s monthly schedule for some reason, I don’t mind the wait.

  18. I just want to know why this had to be on hiatus. I guess when I re-read the previous issues maybe the 4th issue will explain it. It can’t be for the art cause Fegredo did Darkness Calls without a break if I remember. (checked on it; yes it came out on time).

So maybe Paul knows….why did this go on hiatus? I seriously want to know.

Anything I’d say would be an assumption. I genuinely don’t know and I genuinely don’t care. It’s a great book and a great summer to be a Mignola fan.

Just relax, lad. Nothing to huff and puff over.

  20. @Paul: I’d relax more if you werent so condescending.

There has to be a reason. Cause if they just took a hitaus just for the hell of it then I got some choice words for Mignola and the people of Dark Horse.

  21. Sorry for the double post, but I did just check #4 to see if my curious mind was on to something.

It wasn’t. No explaining for the hitaus except for that it was planned ahead of time. Bah!

  22. I think based on the rest of Josh’s pull list, this or Blackest Night are heavy contenders for POTW

  23. @TNC: do you need anymore rope?

  24. @edward: No, I’m digging my grave at the moment.

  25. Call it sour grapes, call it beating a dead horse. I don’t care.

This issue was medicore and the hitaus definitely killed any enjoyment I had with this mini. I hope I can get back into this when issue six rolls around. But I was really bummed by this.

  26. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    We get it.

  27. @Paul: So go ahead and say how incredible this issue was and how anyone complaining about anything is always wrong. That’s always fresh…

  28. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

That’s my point. "Complaining" If you just gave a reasonable, lucid review it’d be fine. All you’re doing is complaining. Substance, man.

  29. I wouldn’t mind waiting even longer if it meant we could have a full Hellboy book and throw out these boring backups. I’ve pretty much forgotten what happened before this issue, so that’ll play into my rating, but like the past 4 issues in my memory this one is forgettable as well. 2/5

  30. I really need to read eariler Hellboy stuff but I have loved what I read.
