  1. I haven’t liked a Byrne book in a bit, but my affection for his Alpha Flight, Fantastic Four, and NeXt Men runs keeps me going back to the well. He is such an incredibly talented artist. It’s his writing that has lost touch with me a bit, but this looks intriguing, we’ll see!

  2. This is a reprint of a 70’s Charlton comic I think. Unless Byrne is redoing the series.

    • No, this is not a reprint. He’s doing a new take on the concept, thus the name is “Doomsday .1”, instead of the original “Doomsday +1”. In this version the Earth is fried by a solar flare, instead of an exchange of nuclear missiles.

  3. I’ve got to say, the HORRIBLE HORRIBLE Franglais Byrne uses on page 2 “Vous etes tous droits?” (I assume that was supposed to mean “Are you all right?” really bummed me out. Unless some French speaker tells me otherwise (and I’m fairly fluent), I can’t even begin to imagine where he got that “translation”..? Someone please tell me I’m wrong.

The actual flare event was pretty horrific.

Not enough here for me to get issue #2, although I will say I liked the Pope and submarine bits.

Overall though, it was off-putting. Character scenes in the skylab seemed forced, and it was too many characters to get used to at once.

I wish John Byrne would get an editor and writer. He artistically still has alot to contribute, but his writing skills have really degenerated, it is hard to believe this is the guy who wrote some of my favorite stuff years ago.

Funny how the leader looked like Byrne, but all buffed out!
