  1. That art…man..jaysis..

    • I like it as an art style, and it definitely goes against what most people would expect from a book with a female protagonist to look like, but I’m not sure it’s a great fit for the kind of book DeConnick is writing. I thought it worked well in issue #1’s space scenes, but not as well during the less action-oriented bits.

I think the disconnect between the style of the bright cover art and the darker, painted interiors might also throwing people.

But Emma Rios is credited as the artist for issues 4 and (I think) 5 so change is coming.

  2. I’m getting it because it’s Kelly Sue, because it’s Carol Danvers, and because I like to encourage Marvel when they “take a chance” on a female creator and/or protagonist.

There were several artists on several arcs on the last volume of the Carol Danvers solo title, hopefully this can last at least as long (something like 50 issues iirc).

  3. Yeah, unfortunately, there was only one writer for that volume. You’d think that would be a good thing, but it wasn’t.

    • I hear ya – I haven’t read anything Brian Reed has written that I actually liked. He wrote some really bad GI Joe comics. Did he just have a job because he was Bendis’ buddy? At least he is “temporarily retired from comics” according to Wiki.

  4. I want to support this title, but with the art being what it is (as Ken said, good but mismatched) I can’t justify the purchase. A shame. I’ll be back on when the artist changes.

  5. I was so psyched to see Marvel finally putting out a new Woman-led, Woman-written book and want to support this in the worst way.
Unfortunately, the art isn’t my style AT ALL (way too muddy and dark for my taste). I have faith that Kelly Sue is going to get around to telling a compelling story if she’s given enough issues to do so, but even that is off to a shaky start with the first issue which was a bit all over the place plot-wise. No way I can justify sticking with this one with so many great books on the stands.
I’d love to see Marvel actually take a risk and put an all-star artist behind a book like this right from the get-go.

  6. I must be on my own here. Liked issue 1 a lot and issue 2 was nearly pick of the week, if it wasn’t for the peerless Saga. The art is not classic comics and a star artist would certainly pull more readers, but it is a good move away from your finches, chos and other big names that would want to put tna in a book, which is manifestly not that type of work. The art is a bit muddy, but it is stylish too.

    • I gotta say, the art felt a lot more appropriate in this issue. There’s some pretty bad-ass action scenes going on here, and Dexter Soy really seems to shine. His Captain Marvel is not someone you’d want to mess with.

    • I’m with you both: digging the art, and I also thought issue #2 was better than the first. Perhaps the art is so different from what was anticipated that people are having trouble getting acclimated.

    • The art definitely improved from Issue 1 to Issue 2. I think soy began to feel more comfortable with the character. I was a little weary about doing a time travel story so early on but she sold me by the last panel. I’ve enjoyed both issues so far, and gave this one five stars. I preordered quite frankly because Kelly Sue asked me to in various podcasts, and because it was $2.99. I read Kelly Sue’s Osborn and thought it was fantastic but hated her arc on Supergirl (moreso that it was a final arc that had no finality to it, and a botched Lois/Kara relationship that didn’t fit the rest of the run). This however shows me that if you give Kelly Sue time and let her do her own thing she can make awesome work. I think this is how she should write all her stories from now on. Start and issue 1 and make it her own, and avoid doing one off arcs in other books.

  7. Dexter Soy’s art really took the forefront in this issue. I love it when Carol’s helmet gets “activated,” you now that crap is about to go down. The whole “butterfly” thing was hilarious. Great issue.

  8. First issue was okay, but sending the hero back to WWII, for me that’s perfect. And we have a lot fewer Pacific Theater Marvel stories so this works extreamly well. I wanna know more about this “Sucker Punch” lite female Air crew…
