  1. The preview art looked great. Amy Reeder’s issues turned out to be a disappointment art-wise, and the story has been bumpy, but still looking forward to this.

    • As a person who is a huge Amy Reeder fan, I have to reluctantly agree. The previews for this issue looks fantastic.

    • I don’t think Amy Reeder is appropo for an action-oriented story. I didn’t mind her first issue, but I could barely get through the second. Had she continued as alternate artist — I would have continued only purchasing the Williams arcs. May still do that if McCarthy’s art ain’t my cuppa tea.

    • From the pencils the art looked really good. I think another inker and/or colorist might have suited her better.

  2. If this issue don’t work, then I’m gonna have to drop this.

Been a bit of a struggle reading this & trying to enjoy it!

  3. So is the new plan to have McCarthy and Williams trade-off arcs?

  4. The problem with this arc for me has been the story structure rather than the art, five stories at once has just made the book unsatisfing issue to issue. Hopefully things pick up here.

    • I agree. I liked the art more than some others did, but I think the fractured storylines are better suited for a trade, and had more of a negative effect than Reeder’s art.

That said, I still dig this book and I’m looking forward to it.

Agreed, big time. This is the last chance issue for me too.

  5. Cover looks nice, i liked Oliver on Batwing but i don’t think it was the book for him, could be interesting to see him do an issue or two of Batwoman.

    • I thought Oliver was fine on Batwing, but I had to drop that book for budgetary reasons. Judging by that cover, I think Oliver would be sweet as alternate artist on Batwoman.

    • That is actually a great idea.

    • I like his style on both. I thought he was pretty perfect on Batwing for how realistic he made the characters look. JHW3 did the same thing with Batwoman, though. I’m in all the way!

  6. Last issue for me. Gotta rain in expenses, and this has been a neat little artsy comic but it just doesn’t deliver enough to keep it on the list.

  7. I think this is the best issue of the arc. A) I never once felt confused. There were times in the previous issues that I had to double check timestamps and wasn’t entirely sure what might be happening in an action scene. B) I dug the art much more overall. Not a perfect 5 issue, but I gave it a solid 4.

  8. Seems we are back on track. I enjoyed this more than the past few issues. Who knew that Mccarthy’s art would fit so well.

  9. Wow, really loved the art on this. And the story is really coming together, too. Good stuff.

  10. Beautiful book, but I find myself getting confused. Probably either have reader’s fatigue from reading too many books today, or I need to read this whole arc in one go. Either way I’ll be sticking around.

  11. Looks great but still I find the story a bit dull, think this is it for me!

  12. I just re-read the current arc through this issue in a sitting, and yes it is much easier to follow when read back to back like this – but the question remains Why? did JH Williams choose to structure the story in this way. Even reading issues 6-9 in one sitting there is no obvious reason that the time skips are employed. Sure, there are a couple moments of “who is this and how did they get here” but the payoff is never really that interesting – not in the way its delivered at least.

One reason (for the time jumps) I can guess is that he wanted to convey story beats for many different characters (specifically the story of Jacob and Bette) that might not normally fit in the flow of a linear story, but the separating of the Kate/Batwoman story seems unnecessary.

I applaud the decision to try something new, but unless there is some huge payoff in the 2 issues, I think the experiment was a failure. I still think McCarthy is a very worthy fill in, but this book needs JH Williams back on art, and a tightening up of the story telling to get it back on track.

    • He said he didn’t want all the action in the last book of the arc, with lots of build-up in the earlier ones that might bore people. Trying to give a mix in each issue. I’m ok with long story arcs so I would have preferred the other way but I would commend them for trying something to break it up.

  13. These stories are isolated enough to just wait on the hardcover. I’ll be switching over sometime soon.

  14. Felt lukewarm about this title for the last few issues but am happy to say I got a lot of enjoyment out of this installment .

  15. The change of artist was quite disruptive for me. Trevor McCarthy was great in Nightwing #4 and I’m sure he’ll do well in this series as well, but the switch was just too distracting. This has been my least favorite issue of the series; mostly because the story kind of just stopped.
