  1. Aw yeah Firefly! Not the best of the new line of Bat titles, but you can’t really go wrong with Dini and Nguyen. I’ve always always been interested in Firefly as a character, so that’s neat. And there’s a Manhunter backup, yay!

  2. Has Nguyen done anything else (besides bat books) for DC?

  3. this and batwoman are the only bat titles that i liked. hope it gets even better

  4. I was for this in issues. But with my budget lately and what’s coming up in August….Cant afford it for issues anymore.

But this was a fun first issue and I cant wait for trade on this.

  5. dc change their prices to 3.99 this week?

  6. i liked the first issue of this, but there are just too many books ahead of it right now. Not sure if i’ll be picking it up or not.

  7. @InfectiousFunk

This is a $4 book. It has more pages. To my recollection DC hasn’t charged more than $3 for a normal 22 page book besides Batman Cacophony.

  8. If I only had $3.99 (plus seven percent sales tax in NJ), this would be the only book I bought.

  9. @Robbydzwonar Your NJ store charges sales tax on new books? Mine only charges sales tax on Back issues….

  10. In OH, we get taxed for both, I believe…

  11. Nguyen can sure draw a good cover.

  12. Really liked the first issue. I think this is a great idea for a book, to show a wider picture of Gotham & not just focus on Batman. I hope this book continues when Batman comes back, because Gotham City has a HUGE cast of interesting characters worth reading about.

  13. I am only getting this book for the Manhunter Co Feature.

  14. in my opion this is the second best batman book

ps is it just me or dose the new robins costume only work in this book and batman and robin

  15. im in n.j yup the charge tax i thought it was the same everywhere…..my mind is blown

  16. @peterporker Yeah, I’m not sure why, but I only get sales taxed on back issues at my shop.

  17. Wikipedia says that Nguyen started his career with Wildstorm in 2000 doing Wildcats and The Authority.  It says he likes to play Street Fighter too.

Yes, we pay sales tax here and it makes my pull list that much more expensive every damn week!  It sucks.

  18. Hey I got an opening this week, cause LCS wont be getting WC #2.

So I’ll be on board for at least one more issue.

  19. @oldmanlogan- in your opinion whats the #1 Batman book? Mine is Detective right now, so I’m guessing yours is either that or Batman & Robin?

  20. I picked this up again cause of no Wednesday Comics this week. This was a soild two issue intro do the series. Everything is set up and Elliot will be intriguing to watch in the future.

Still I have to trade wait on this. This is a good series, but not going enough to follow month after month.

  21. @WadeWilson

    Batman & Robin

  22. Sometimes it feels like I like Streets Of Gotham more then Batman & Robin, but what if they both came out on the same Wednesday?!  I guess then it would have to be a tie because I’m loving this.

I’m still not diggin Winick of Bats yet though.  Is it possible for me to drop a Batman book?  I was about to even start buying Outsiders again!

  23. I’m enjoying the story, but not so much on the art.

  24. Sales tax sucks here in Cali (9.75%). My pull list gives me a 10% discount that is pretty much wiped out due to sales tax.

  25. I had been debating whether or not to get this since the first issue.  I got to the comic shop, didn’t see it at first, and when I saw it I felt disappointed.

I guess that’s a good sign you should drop a book.

  26. On the sidenote about tax: Here in northern NY I go to two different shops. One changes tax on nothing, not on new books or on backissues. The other shop only charges tax if the owner is working the register, and in that case he charges tax on new issues and backissues. I’m not sure what the legal rules are, but that owner is a bit of a dick; the sort of a guy who has a sign up saying he’ll give you "50% cover price trade-value!" if you trade in your comics to him, but then when you bring your comics in he leafs through them and offers you like 10% of cover price. If you bring him newer comics he says the 50% figure is only good for older comics. If you bring him older comics he says no one wants them because they’re old. Venting over.

  27. @miyamotofreak: I really feel for you guys at California. That is just ridiculous taxing.

Does anyone have any ideas who this big thug is with the brass knuckles? It cant be Bullock cause Dini wrote it where the guy has fought Batman before. Maybe Conor has an idea on who it is.

  28. Good issue, not outstanding. 4/5 for me. Enjoyed the back-up. Odd coloring mistake on Huntress in the mainstory.

  29. Digging this a lot. The art was REALLY strong in the Firefly pages & I loved the twist at the end, *SPOILER* not that a billion dollars would be much to Bruce Wayne’s fortune lol

The Manhunter back-ups are bitter sweet, to only have half a comic of such a sweet series is like a tease, but I guess it’s better than having nothing.

  30. weighing in on the sales tax:

i live in jersey too and just realized i am getting charged sales tax on new books. kinda lame but not all that surprising. another realization: this is the first week that every book i purchased was $3.99. depressing.

  31. @watchthesparks Yeah, not sure why my store does that. I imagine my store, somewhere along the line, decided that it would offer a 7% discount on new books. (I am from NJ, to clarify)

And yeah, I had the all $3.99 week too. Except for… JSA vs. Kobra of all things.

  32. When is sales tax on a book not apart of the sale?

Comics is a print media and books are always on a sales tax. I cant imagine comic books get a free ride on that.

  33. @TNC They’re a periodical, actually.

  34. No sales tax on comics in Rhode Island or Massachusetts. At least not at the 2 stores I frequent. (I live on the State line)

  35. I find this confusing.  I have paid tax on every comic i’ve ever bought since I was 8 years old…  Otherwise, i enjoyed this book alot, and the back-up actually has me ready to grab some Manhunter trades next week.

  36. I thought that this was even better than the first issue.  More fun, more mystery, and a better ending than the first (at least for me).

Dini continues the impossible, making Hush an interesting character.  People NEED to be paying more attention to the work he does with many of the villains he uses.  He is doing the same thing that Johns has been doing but with smaller scale characters, and mostly villains.  From Harley, to Freeze, to Hush, (did he have anything to do with Riddler and Penguin??) and I hope he keeps it up.  Many is the number of Bat-baddies that could use a little reality and pathos to re-invigorate them.

  37. Even though I am dropping this, I will say that the Manhunter back up was much improved. I still don’t care enough of the character to find trades of her. But I like how Andreyko can tell a compelling story with half the space.

  38. this was an alright issue for me. I liked the first one better and would keep going with this if there werent so many other damn fine books out right now. Maybe ill catch this one in trade.

  39. Dropped. Too many books, too many $3.99 books– have to cut some fat, and with two really good Batman books (Batman and Robin and Detective), these other books are on the chopping block.

  40. only bat book (with batman in it) thats worth following

  41. I thought this was better than the last issue, and a solid 4/5. I like that we’re setting up Hush masquering as Bruce again, and am very interested to see where that goes. I felt some of the characterization was off, but it was still very, very good. Manhunter back-up started off kind of wonky but got better as it progressed. 4/5.

  42. Thought the story was great, art was great, 4/5 all the way around. My only issue is I wish you could just get this book for $2.99. I mean leave out the second feature and let me pay $2.99. It save’s DC money and me money if you leave out extra pages of something I don’t want in the first place. B&R and Red Robin are both $2.99 why bloat this up and make me pay $3.99… Oh well I still bought it and now after this issue I’m hooked.

  43. because Manhunter is awesome, that’s why.

  44. @HeavyJ Price points on comics are going to raise. DC imagined that offering extra content on some of the books to cross $3.99 would appease fans. Certainly some weren’t going to like, but I’d rather get the back-up, even for someone I don’t lie, then shell out $3.99 for a 22 page comic.

  45. Really impressed with this book after i thought the first one was mediocre. It’s up there for POW with Blackest Night #1

  46. Picked up issue #1 and #2…and don’t think i’ll be getting #3.  Dini is the strong point.  Don’t care for the Manhunter backstory.  Not thrilled with the art either, particularly Robin.  But am loving B&R, Sirens, and Detective…was hoping this would fill the empty week.  It’s not bad, but just doesn’t do enough for me.

I do agree with the comments that Dini has been great with the villains.  Dick was good too.

  47. That’s what she said.

  48. I liked the issue, but I do wish Hush would disappear already.
