  1. I have a tumultuous relationship with this book.

    #1: Not bad.
    #2: Glorious.
    #3: Um… huh?
    #4: Zzzzz…
    #5: Inspired.

This is my make or break issue. Hope it’s awesome.

    • ^Yeah, you said it (though I think I liked issue #4 slightly more than you). I’m probably going to start reading this in trade after this issue. But here’s hoping that Hickman gives us a cool Captain Universe origin issue — he probably will — even though it’s about three issues too late for my taste.

    • I’m in exactly the same boat. I’ve liked parts, but not consistent enough to continue if this one doesn’t blow me away.

    • Same for me. Next month will be my last in issue if this doesnt jump to a 4/5 quality average.

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels like this. If this issue isn’t great I’m going to hop off.

    • I mostly agree, but I’m definitely staying at least for the Dustin Weaver issues.

  2. I’ve really enjoyed these one-and-done issues, although i also have alot of 80s inspired love for characters like Hyperion, Cap Universe & The Imperial Guard. And it’s a rare Hickman comic that i really dislike.

  3. Pretty psyched for this issue hoping for more backstory of goodness, totally loving this series as I thought I would but Hickman can do no wrong in my rose-tinted eyes!

Really looking forward to #7-9 for the Weaver arc & the whole Newuniverse story-line!

  4. too…many….avengers…..comics…..running…out….of….money

    • I’d probably add “good” in there after “many” and before “avengers”, but I hear you man! If you would have told me this time last year that I’d be pulling 13 Marvel books (nearly half of which qualify as Avengers books), I’d probably have laughed in your face.

But here we are, and I’m not sure I’ve ever enjoyed comics as much as I do right now!

    • @Ken: Word.

    • I’m right there with you Ken – I’ve never bought so many Marvel comics in my life these last few months.

    • You do know that you can have self restraint. You do not need to buy every book just because it is connected to Avengers. Don’t blame Marvel for wanting to make money by making so many. Just pick what you really like and leave the rest.

    • @YaknSnak82: I think you might have misread the previous comments. No one’s blaming Marvel — quite the opposite in fact. I can’t think of another time during my life when they’ve had so many books delivering so much consistent quality.

I can’t speak for ghostmann or USPUNX, but I don’t think anyone’s complaining.

    • Thanks for the financial advice YaknSnak82

But as Ken as already said, my comment wasn’t a complaint – believe it or not I actually enjoy spending money on comic books I like and not spending money on comics I don’t like.

But I do need to exercise self restraint in replying to obfuscated iFanboys

      😉

  5. I’ve been enjoying every issue so far. To varying degrees, sure, but that’s normal. I really like what Hickman’s doing here, and I think it’s a bad move to dismiss the character focused issues as superfluous. There are big ideas being set up in every issue, and with a writer like Hickman you can never tell what’ll come into play down the line.

  6. Wasn’t impressed with the last 3 issue….Dropped. The work Hickman has done at Marvel hasn’t really impressed me, but his Image stuff kills. Looking forward to East of West.

  7. Just knowing Deodato is soon makes me down on this whole thing.

  8. I’m hoping we see more “Issue 5 Adam Kubert” here and not “Issue #4 Adam Kubert”. That Issue 4 Adam was kinda bad.

  9. Anyone know what they mean about a hidden code in the first five issues? Sounds like a fun little bonus thing (like the org chart) that I was unaware of.

    • It may be in reference to ‘Blackveil’ (which may have been in Avengers or New Avengers.) it had the alien language ‘letters’ corresponding with English letters.
So maybe more of the alien language can be deciphered if more of the ‘code’ is revealed.

I have been wrong before though!

  10. Captain Universe is such a great character design. Guessing that was Michael Golden — as C.U. debuted in his Micronauts run. Marvel, please find a way to get those Mantlo/Golden issues collected in trade or hardcover!!!

  11. this has been rather disappointing.
although never really enjoyed hickman’s scale of writing.

  12. Somewhere out there, Jim Shooter is smiling.

  13. Boy those moments involving the ‘Superior’ Spider-Man stuck out like a sore thumb. Not even Hickman can be dickish Spider-Man work for me. Everything else was good though and Captain Universe seems to be perfect for a guy like Hickman to write. Would have loved to see more of Tamara’s origin like we did with Isabel last week. Kubert’s art, with Martin’s colors, was really good though. Not perfect like with Smasher’s issue but still great none the less.

    4/5

  14. Man I sure do miss Ribic. The art in this issue felt extremely rushed – but when you put out six issues in two months I guess that’s trade off. I’m digging the story but think Secret Avengers is edging out this series as the flagship Avengers title.

  15. i dont know if i am just not very bright but at the end of this comic i was like, huh?

  16. Unlike Smasher & Hyperion, i don’t think Captain Universe comes out of this any more interesting. Oh well.

  17. Fuckin’ NEW UNIVERSE returns! Nightmask! Starbrand! Kickers, Inc.! Justice! Holy crap! NEW UNIVERSE in the 616?!?!?!

  18. I don’t know shit about the New Universe so nothing to terribly exciting about this issue, but Tamara’s story is sad, and I imagine it will only get sadder.

  19. Totally the pick of the week for me & hey everyone check out the awesome interview on CBR plus some excellent sneaky peeks of upcoming interiors, Weaver’s art kick ass!

  20. Of the three spotlight issues, I would rank Smasher #1, Hyperion #2, Captain Universe #3. I was not that impressed with this last issue.
