ASTONISHING X-MEN #36

“MONSTROUS,” PART 1

Not all monsters are easy to spot — some of them live among us, undetected or long forgotten. Some of them live inside us, in the dark corners of our hearts, feeding on our secret fears of loss. But in the Marvel Universe, most of them live on Monster Island. Or, at least, they did. A mysterious exodus is underway; monsters spilling onto nearby shores – with catastrophic results – and it falls upon a small group of X-Men to both save the population from destruction and to solve an imposing riddle: What are monsters afraid of? New series writer Daniel Way (Deadpool) is joined by superstar artist Jason Pearson to bring you a widescreen, mega blockbuster story filled with classic Kirby monsters, heart-stopping revelations and over-the-top action!

  1. I hope this is great when I get it in graphic novel.

  2. Is this going to come on time with the new creative team?  Cuz I’m sorta tempted

  3. New writer; thank god.

  4. Hmm, but the writer is Daniel Way who is much more miss than hit for me. I don’t think I need a (7th? 8th? I have lost track) X-Men book with adjective-less running, so this has a very short time to impress.

  5. Jason Pearson is a great cover artist. But as an interior artist? Eh……

His figures can be pretty funky, especially if it’s drawing consistantly for 22+ pages. But this sounds like an interesting premise. Probably a trade wait for me.

  6. @TNC …what? Pearson is an awesome sequential artist as well.

  7. I love Pearson.

  8. @TheNextChampion  Did you ever read Pearson’s Savage Dragon mini? good stuff.

  9. Really liked Jason Pearson’s stuff on Wade Wilson’s War, but this work left much to be desired (his Emma Frost esp is horrible), and Way stereotypes Wolvie in this, one of my biggest pet peeves.

  10. @RahUniQue/Bedrix: Again he is great at covers, but you really see his flaws quite easily when he does a full issue.

I recently picked up Wade Wilson’s War (also @Franktiger mentioned) and it had some great pages. But there were also some pretty funky one’s too. Especially with his depictions on Domino, Silver Sable, and Bullseye.

  11. @TheNextChampion  those depictions I liked, esp his Silver Sable in particular, but did you see Emma’s face in this?  That’s not Emma.

Mentallo is a cool villain, but this storyline seems generic to me, and Wolvie’s always been a team player.  His team-ups with Maverick and Sabretooth back in the day when he was a Canadian secret agent; and with Captain America, Spider-Man, and not to mention the Avengers to name a few others, Day doesn’t know what he’s talking about really.

  12. The variant cover is awesome! Love me some Foom.

  13. Killing Armor’s parents? Really? And I think I just read several Monster island comics already. I think Astonishing and I will part ways (pun intended?). It has been a good eight years.

Eight years?! Holy crap this title was late a lot.
