ALL-STAR WESTERN #5

Slippery sewer pipes make a brutal place for a fight – but that won’t stop Jonah Hex and Amadeus Arkham from facing off against a gang of kidnappers beneath Gotham City. And when the thugs get the best of them, Hex and Arkham find themselves swept away to a pitch-black cave with seemingly no way out – and lots of bats! Will they find a way to escape Gotham City’s dark underbelly before Hex’s matches are all burned out?

Also: For the Barbary Ghost, death is only the beginning of her plan for revenge!

  1. Jonah Hex possibly in the Batcave (before it became the batcave)?

    Sweet!

  2. Just when I thought I was out, THEY PULL ME BACK IN!

    • Curious as to what pulled you back in.

    • Ya same thing happened to me, I loved the first two issues but after the 3rd issue along with that el diablo backup I was ready to drop this title depending on last issue but it paid off

    • If the last issue pulled you in, that’s cool. If it is the solicit, that’s strange but that means solicits can actually work.

There was too much bitching, negativity and disrespect of this comic in the last issue’s comment thread.

I had a Jonah Hex-like sneer on my face while I read those comments.

    • Ya hell I could have even made a comment myself I’m not sure but this new story seems interesting although I would rather do without the back up story’s and pay 2.99 for this book for just Jonah Hex

  3. Loved the first issue but did not get anything out of issues 2 & 3, specifically the art seemed rushed and amateur – like a child had traced it with a magic marker. As a result I could not get into it the story quite the same as I had initially. Dropped this from my pull list but picked up issue 4 because I don’t like leaving my LCS hanging, ended up enjoying issue 4 much more than the previous issue and now really don’t know which way I will end up going. At the moment I’m going to be picking up issue 5 this week and see where we go from there.

  4. I’ve really enjoyed the main story, but I keep feeling ripped off when I get to the backups. I think I might rely on DC’s good track record with trades and wait for the collection.

  5. Great series but the back-ups have got to go.

  6. What a great series so far! Really enjoying the backups- helps to expand the world being built in the New DC.

  7. I love Jonah Hex, however, even though this series is written by the same creative team as before the reboot, it doesn’t “feel” the same. I don’t know why but it just does not, but here’s hoping that the loving feeling returns. lol.

  8. Is this considered a series of “one and done” issues like Jonah Hex was before the New 52? Am I able to jump on from any previous issue or would #1 be my best bet?

  9. Ii like the back ups to the Hex story. DC has by far the best western characters and now they have a chance to use them all without having to dedicate a whole book to just one. Though we all know that Jonah Hex is the true star! And for Gray and Palmiotti a chance to add to the list of great western characters with new ones. I enjoyed the Barbary Ghost. An asian woman never comes to mind when I think Western but it worked for me.

  10. More than willing to shell out $3.99 for this book every month. The back-ups haven’t been great, but the Hex story is consistanly one of the best reads of the month, so I’m willing to throw down that extra dollar. I see the back-ups as a “DVD bonus feature” to the Jonah Hex story. They may not always be great, and you may only look at them once, but they aren’t the reason you buy the DVD, just an included extra.

  11. The pencils/inking is still damaging my enjoyment of this title, but saying that the colouring is holding it all together.

the interplay between Hex and Arkham is quality

  12. I just thought of something:

Other then the massive Bat and cave people in this issue, does this really imply this is ‘THE’ batcave? Palmiotti/Gray are definitely using some Morrison ideas in this issue but for someone who never read ‘Return of Bruce Wayne’ they must feel very ripped off from the cover.

  13. I love ALL STAR WESTERN – Jonah Hex’s story as well as the backups – I think they’re all fun. This is one of my very favorite books to get every month.

However, this issue was the weakest for me. (I find lots of the New 52’s #5 issues the weakest of the lines, for some reason.) Firstly, I’m not thrilled with this cave setting; it seems to limit the beauty of the artwork we’ve been treated to in previous issues.

Secondly, I just don’t like the idea that anyone was in the Bat Cave before little Bruce Wayne stumbled into it. Whether it’s Morrison who writes it, or my ALL STAR writers, I just don’t like that bit of continuity. So a story showing us how Jonah, Dr. Arkham, a bunch of thugs, a bunch of captive children, and a lost tribe of natives were ALL traipsing around that Bat Cave before Bruce got there… I just don’t like it! It feels like it ruins the specialness of Bruce owning his origin, if that makes sense to anybody.

    • And allow me to nitpick: how on earth did Dr. Arkham’s pince-nez stay on his face after he got plunged into the water and fell down that waterfall?! lol

  14. I usually am not too interested in backups but I really like this Barbary Ghost story a lot. I hope sooner or later we will get a team-up with Hex and the backup characters. Perhaps a Bat Lash story as well?
