  1. I have heard such mixed reviews of this but I want to read it, would you all recomend getting this version or should itried to find a cheap used copy. I love coie, 52, and identity crisis, and I like infinite crisis so i’m not sure how this stands up to those.

    • This is absolutely one of my favorite superhero comics ever, but that’s not necessarily a popular opinion (at all). It’s very, very much unlike COIE, Identity Crisis, and Infinite Crisis, though if you liked 52, you may appreciate the appearances of The Question and Batwoman here.

Frankly, this is *the* definitive version of the book: It has the previously uncollected 3D version of Superman Beyond and all of the other Grant Morrison-written tie-ins, including the Batman two-parter which elucidates what happens to the character between his appearances in FC. The art is, for the most part, gorgeous and will look fantastic in the oversized format, but there are some pages of less-than-amazing fill-ins. I haven’t read the seven new story pages, of course, but it goes without saying that you won’t get those elsewhere.

I’d say if $100 isn’t an insurmountable cost to you and you have a strong interest in the creators and story, go for it. If you’re just looking for a follow-up to other Crisis stories, though, you might be better off risking less on the TPB.

    • It does not stand up to those other stories at all. I love DC events and this one just did not make any sense and was so convoluted. If I remember correctly, there are 2 or 3 issues where it is Superman battling metaphysical concepts on some ethereal plane. The story sounds like it could have been good, but then Grant Morrison masturbated all over it.

    • Easily my favourite of all these Crisis events. Don’t bother with the naysayers who seem to personally attack Morrison every time he writes something. This is an incredibly interesting and challenging take on the summer event and is something everyone should give a go. If you like Morrison go for the Absolute, if you’re not sure go for the tpb.

  2. Personally, I would recommend getting the trade of this before going the absolute route. I’m a huge Morrison/DC fan but even I had to read this story with Wikipedia on through most of it because of the sheer density of the text. If you like Morrison’s run on Animal Man this will probably be right up your ally because it ultimately a story about telling stories, if you’re not into the Morrison’s meta-textual stuff then avoid this like the plague. Also, Superman Beyond 3D is possibly the best thing I’ve read from Morrison aside from All-Star.

  3. This is a beautiful edition, huge fan. It was like reading it again for the first time.
