Were You Nominated for a 2009 Harvey Award? Find out Here

Many creators awoke this morning to discover they had been nominated for the 2009 Harvey Awards. Some were already awake, still inking away at another great page. Others were watching DVR'd episodes of Burn Notice. The nominees were selected by industry professionals who will also vote for the winners. Those will be announced in August at the Baltimore Comic Con.

Of note on this list, a strong showing for DC's Bat titles, Naoki Urasawa, IDW's Rocketeer, Wednesday Comics, Mazzucchelli's Asterios Polyp and Jeff Kiney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the inclusion of the incredible Jonah Hex #50 in the best single issue or story category (after not making the cut for the Eisner's comparable category); a noticeable shortage of Marvel Comics nominees.

Comments

  1. No Ivan Reis. (Sigh)

  2. No love for Afrodisiac?

  3. @jackietam: I second that sigh and add an angry "Horseshit!". How you can ignore a phenom like Ivan Reis is beyond me. That guy delivered on every page on BN.

Nice to see Williams and Quitely get their props. Glad to see the Walking Dead love too.

I expected to see Morrison on here but it’s enough to see B&R in the Best New Series category.

  4. Jason Aaron all the way!!! I want Scalped to win as many prizes as possible! The Gnawing was so AMAZING!!!

  5. @jestr Afrodisiac came out in 2010, so it doesn’t apply for the 2009 awards.

  6. The Best New Series Category is a perfect storm. They’re all pretty awesome.

  7. how on Earth did Geoff Johns get another nomination for Best Writer for Blackest Night when each issue of Batman and Robin was drastically better than that entire series.

  8. Morrison and Reis are obvious absences that really should be included. Other than that it seems like a very solid list.

  9. Is Iredeemable really a "new series"?

  10. I’m kind of conflicted between Quitely and Williams on best artist

  11. Williams. Done.

  12. Man, I’m mad at that Wimpy Kid. http://www.thisisknutz.com/

  13. JH Williams. Every page was a gorgeous work of art, not to mention the transition work from past to present in the flashback issues. Everything about his run on detective was perfect.

  14. Reis may have been passed over for his Blackest Night work in 2009, but he did finish the series in 2010.  He will most probably be nominated next year.

  15. Wait? where is Nascar Heroes? THOSE BASTARDS! :O

  16. Glad to see Kirkman with a few nods.

One minor quibble that I have is: why the breakout between artist and cartioonist?

  17. The paintball episode of Community is one of my favorite episodes of anything ever.

  18. Anyone else notice Marvel’s relitivly low number of nominations?

    Nominations Overal : Seperate Titles

    15 :  9 DC Comics

    13 :  8 Abrams ComicArts

    11 :  7 Image Comics

     8 :  5 IDW

7 :  2 Amulet Books (all but 1 for Diary of a Wimpy Kid)

     6 :  4 Dark Horse Comics

     6 :  2 Pantheon

     5 :  4 Fantagraphics Books

     5 :  2 BOOM! Studios

     5 :  2 Drawn and Quarterly

     4 :  4 Marvel

     3 :  3 Top Shelf

     3 :  2 W.W. Norton

     2 :  2 Graphix

     2 :  2 Viz Media

     2 :  1 Titan Books

1 :  1 ComicMix, First Second, Hyperion Books, Metropolitan Books, Oni Press, TwoMorrows & Villard

  19. Glad that scalped got some love this year, but amazed that jock receives no love for his covers. Every one of his covers could potentially be cover of the year. Even if you are not a fan of the series, I find it hard to disagree with that. Take a look at his covers from the past year and please tell me if I’m wrong.

  20. Rooting for Scapled, Jonah Hex and The Walking Dead.

  21. Geoff Johns really doesn’t deserve that nomination, in my opinion. This was easily his worst year to date. On the other hand, I’m glad Scalped is getting some much deserved love.

  22. Nice list of nominations. Can’t think of a single thing wrong with them.

  23. Dark Reign. Whaddya gonna do?

  24. I don’t think Johns or Kirkman deserve nods for those books in 2009. Johns because Blackest Night was not that great, and Walking Dead had a weak year (and if you don’t think so, think about how fucking good it is now). And if Johns got a nom, then Reis should’ve got one as well. And not to not see Sinclair with a best colorist nomination is also weak. I mean Hamaker is pretty much coloring the same book for a while, does he need a nomination for each volume?

I also agree that Jock needed a nomination for his covers.

And honestly, I’m sick of Dear Billy getting passed over. It’s the best Ennis work in a long fucking time.

  25. Well i hope jason aaron gets something he deserves it. But i do love robert kirkman and geoff johns.I am very happy steve hamaker got a nomination because i was not wanting to see bone in color but guess what it was beautifull.

  26. Jonah Hex, very cool. Let’s go Scalped

  27. I hope Scalped picks up many awards.
