  1. Wow, that looks really bad.

  2. I’m not feeling it. I’ll give it a shot any way, but I don’t see a “Spider-Man” show so far – just “Spider-Man tagging along with the Avengers”

  3. I concur, that was not very good. 🙁

  4. Is Spider-Man the super hero with the most cartoon versions? It sure feels that way, which must make doing another one difficult for the writers so I applaud them for trying something different. Looks like fun.

    • That’s exactly what I thought, there has been so many Spider-man cartoons already, it’s cool to see them doing something different with it. I think it looks pretty good.

  5. This looks like a lot of fun. Remember, gentlemen, you might not be the target audience.

    • YES. I wish I could vote this comment up so it’s the first one after the article.

Anyone on this site is ABSOLUTELY NOT THE TARGET AUDIENCE.

Feel free to have an opinion, but don’t lose sight of that fact.

    • COMICBOOK GUY ALERT!!! totally agree with you guys on this. We are not the target audience.

there is endless comedy in grown ass adults bitching and moaning that a cartoon designed for and marketed to children isn’t up to their adult super comic geek standards. C’mon guys, lets check ourselves here.

    • See Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff girls and Johnny Bravo still hold up. It’s because they targeted children without being condescending.

    • Well, Young Justice wasn’t targeted to us as well, but they could do something much better. I wish the animations was better cos I’m a huge Paul Dini fan. But guess I’m going to have to give this a pass.

    • @muddi900 @MrSethypants

You bring up some examples of good shows that are designed for children, yet still have some appeal for adults. I think that’s totally cool, but I look at shows that achieve that kind of cross-demographic success as EXCEPTIONS to the rule (Animaniacs, B:TAS, Avatar, Justice League Unlimited and Wolverine and The X-Men also spring to mind).

And it’s cool when exceptions to the rule pop up, but as adult fans of these characters, I think we have to realize that there’s nothing wrong with a creating a cartoon WITHOUT adults viewers in mind.

Case in point, I loved the 90s X-Men cartoon as a kid. I tried to watch a few episodes on Netflix Instant recently, and it is PAINFUL. Poor animation, bad dialogue, and terrible voice acting. But as an 11 year old, I probably would have thrown down with any adult who told me that show sucked.

  6. Well I would consider Spiderman to be Marvel’s Batman, so I am not surprised that he gets so many cartoon interpretations. This looks like it has potential. We’ll see what happens.

  7. spidey on a motorcycle that shoots webs? yuck, but i will still watch

  8. meh. i’m apathetic based on the trailer. on the one hand, i think it’s neat to see the spider-man universe expanded beyond what the non-comic book reading knows and i like the idea that spider-man is just okay at what he does at the beginning of the series. on the other hand, the animation looks pretty shoddy and i rankle at the idea of shoe-horning gadgets like a motorcycle and a web-targeting system or whatever. so. yeah. i guess i just don’t care about this show.

  9. Looks like a lot of fun.

  10. Kids will probably like it. But I gotta say, from my old geezer perspective, it looks like they are just using “ultimate” the way the nineties used the word “extreme.”

    Example:
Knitting. Boring, right? But ULTIMATE knitting? Sign me up!

  11. I’m not entirely won over, especially with the distinct lack of Spidey rogues in the trailer. Don’t know that it’ll beat out Spectacular, but I’m willing to give it a few weeks to wow me.

  12. I was good with it right up until the motorcycle.

  13. This looks pretty damn great…I’m almost jealous that kids nowadays are starting to get cartoons like this again.

  14. This looks like it will be a great superhero cartoon for kids. I can see my niece and nephews LOVING this.

  15. No matter what this series does it will always be what killed Spectacular Spider-man which I loved.

    • I really doubt this killed Spectacular Spider-Man. This was probably made because of the lack of a Spider-Man cartoon. The biggest issue was the transition away from 4kids tv, where plenty of people could watch the first season, and when the network changed, they went to Disney XD, a channel not as many people had. Plus the entire second season debuted in Canada first, where the ended up on youtube every week, and most people, including myself, watched it there, meaning less viewers for the already smaller Disney XD audience. Once Disney bought Marvel, Sony gave the tv show to them, and for some reason they decided to end it.
This does suck because that was becoming my all-time favorite comic book cartoon, and we have so many unresolved plot threads. I’ll always miss that show, and this does not seem, to me, to be a suitable replacement.

    • No dude they canceled Spectacular because they wanted make a series in house.

    • Agreed. Spectacular was the best, it was a mix of Spider-man 2 (the movie) and Ultimate Spider-man (the comic). It is definitive for me.

  16. As stated above, glad to see them taking a different approach with this. How many times in the last decade have we seen the Spidey origin retold? Good on them.

  17. I kind of feel like this could work. Obviously, the trailer is supposed to be saying “Hey! Check this out! He’s fun, he’s witty, and there’s tons of action along with some comedy!” and that’s fine. It’s a trailer. People weren’t too hot on Teen Titans when it was about to come out, but that quickly changed. That show got cartoony and anime-like at times, but it could be very serious when it wanted to. Spider-man’s whole thing is that he’s someone you CAN relate to, so I don’t know if they’d totally ignore that fact. I’m going to give it a few episodes and see what happens.

  18. Marvel shouldn’t cancel ”The Spectacular Spider-Man”. That was one freaking good Spidey cartoon!

  19. I actually thought Spidey’s dialog was actually funny for once, which hasn’t always been the case with his cartoons. And, I think the voice actor actually sounds like a kid, which is also refreshing for character who is supposed to be a high school kid.

  20. Like that they’re bringing the “Iron Spidey” suit to this show, but it was just a costume, not actual Iron Man armor for Spidey, i.e. there should be no repulsors AT ALL.

  21. A lot of what I am reading here reminds me of the complaints about Brave and the Bold before it aired and we all know how that one turned out. And even then it took that show a season or so to really grow into its full potential. Honestly, I do think USM has a lot to live up to considering just remarkable of a show Spectacular was and while I do wish that one had gotten a longer run, I intend to fully give this incarnation a fair chance. The creatives involved alone are beyond impressive. Are there some moments in the trailer that look like they were designed to sell toys? Yes, but it is hard to fully judge something like that out of context. I also have no doubt that the “Power & Responsibility” angle will definitely play a role. If nothing else I love the inclusion of the other young heroes like Power Man, Iron Fist, Nova, and White Tiger since that is something that could really give the show a fun and truly distinct dynamic different from other TV incarnations of the webhead. If we have to have a new Spidey cartoon, why just repeat what has come before? Time will tell but I have my fingers crossed. I just wish it was the same Nick Fury and Iron Man from Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cause that would be awesome.

  22. While I agree with the animation quality complaints, too much comedy and all these other trivial factors, are we serious? This is a cartoon for kids being aired on Saturday morning, they’re not marketing it towards adults although a little edge in my opinion can help hold parents attention and keeps kids from being too sheltered. The Avengers looks great, the shorts should be fun and Marvel should really take a cue from DC’s direct to bluray/dvd PG-13 full length animated movies if they wanna capture the adult crowds attention with animation. Young Justice has a PG-13 rating and has some edge with suggestive material and love it, just hope the move from 8pm to 8am (roughly) doesn’t lead to watering down the content. With Disney at they’re side, bad animation shouldn’t be an issue, but in any case, superhero Saturday morning cartoons block is about time. So cheers to Marvel Universe and DC Nation.

  23. I think it looks fun! I’m glad they’re including his other suits! More specifically the Civil War suit he got from Tony. I love that one.

    • In an earlier reply I said the same about the suit, but I do not like that they straight up made it armor, complete with repulsors. That wasn’t what the suit was about. If Tony could give repulsors to Spidey, why not Cap or Hawkeye? Makes no sense.

  24. I like this. I won’t hate until I see a couple episodes. At first I thought that, with the “Ultimate” name, they were actually going to base it heavily on the comics. But then I realized that, honestly, it can be a bit dark for Sunday morning cartoons and the kid demographic, so I understand the light-hearted, comedic nature of it. I have to say, though, that I didn’t like the fact that, at least the way they cut the trailer, that the only reason they’re using the “Ulitmate” moniker was due to Fury wanting to make Peter the “Ultimate” Spider-Man. Just smacks of capitalizing on the name.

But, this seems like it’d be more like a “What if,” in which the last Peter Parker “Ultimate” arc didn’t happen (yet) and he had more time to train with S.H.I.E.L.D.

  25. What neums said. This definitely feels like what would happen is Death of Spider-Man didn’t happen. And Bendis was no longer the sole writer 😛 Honestly, I liked it. Do feel that Spider-Man shouldn’t have a motorbike, what with the webs, but the Iron Spider suit looks cool.

  26. I think it looks good. I like that they are doing something different. Too often it seems like every Spider-Man cartoon retells the same storylines, (origin, Sinister Six, Venom, etc.)

  27. I doubt this will be as good as the 90’s SPidey cartoon. I will still check it out. I agree with the above commenters saying Spidey’s voice is off, it just doesn’t feel right for the part.

  28. Just noticed something else: Why does he need holographic targeting on his web-shooters? Isn’t his web-slinging subtly guided by Spider-Sense? They referred to this in the 616 (pre-Spider-Island) when his slinging was off because he’d wiped out the Sense while battle Smythe.

  29. I must be in a weird minority here, totally enjoyed the trailer seemed like it took the lighter elements of ultimate spider-man and mixed with plenty of action figure tie in merchandising. As far as the voice it doesn’t really bother me all that much. Looking forward to watching this with my nephew!

  30. None of the x-men shows would be targeted to me these days but they still hold up. MLP:FIM isn’t targeted to me and that’s a pretty cool show! Same with transformers: animated or prime! And a motorcycle riding up a spider web is still kinda retarded. But on the other hand, you can’t deduce much from a two minute clip using only action scenes. USM is my favourite/only comic book so I’m probably a little precious about it.

  31. Good to see that they finally gave Deadpool… I mean, Spider-Man a new show.
