The Music of DC Comics

It is my belief, having seen John Williams conduct it live on at least two occasions, that the theme from Superman is of the finest, if not the finest, movie themes ever conceived of.  So it is fitting that it is featured on this new CD of "The Music of DC Comics: 75th Anniversary Edition," along with a whole lot of other music from various adaptations of DC properties over the years.

If this track list doesn't jog your memories and remind you of some gems from the past, you're just no fun at all.  Some of these have never been released before.

Comments

  1. What, no theme from Superman: TAS? Even more than the movie theme, for me, that is the iconic Superman anthem.

Can’t wait to get my grubby little mits on this. And, as one of the last cavemen still buying CDs, I can support this noble endeavor legitimately. Good for me!

  2. How much?

  3. all of these songs could almost be used as themes for your daily routine. Going for a run? Use the flash. Going for a swim? use Auqaman. going to fly with wings made with a special metal that gives you flight? use Hawkman!

  4. Hey yeah, where’s the Superman and Batman themes? Arguably, two themes DCAU is remembered for….

It’s a really good list outside of that, if it’s on iTunes I’ll definitely buy a few of those tracks.

  5. I am surprised they didn’t include the theme to the Flash TV series.

  6. No Batman TAS or Superman TAS theme? That’s pretty crazy. It’s a good tracklist but has some incredibly glaring omissions that keep it from being a must-buy.

  7. @ctrosejr: Me too! I thought the Flash track was that one until I saw the year.

  8. There are probably rights issues with the music that isn’t on there.

  9. Yeah, prolly. I actually burned a CD earlier this year with all my favorite TV themes, and Flash was right there at the beginning. Something about that one feels so epic. It elevates the show past it’s humble content, in my humble.

    Top 5 tracks: Batman (1966)

                       Batman Beyond

                       Batman: Brave and the Bold

                       Superman (Max Fleischer style)

                       Wonder Woman Tv Theme

Special mention to The Atom’s theme, because it is a song about the Atom.

  10. @josh: I could see how that would apply to the mucg older stuff. However, I would have thought that a lot of music was owned by Warners since they own DC and go through their own video and music companies. Then again, they may be saving for future releases.

  11. Rights have changed a lot since the digital music revolution. When music is made for a production, the rights can go all over the place.  The composer might have digital rights, because they didn’t think it was an issue back in 1990. It could be that the royalties for the composer are too high.  I worked in that field for a while.  It could be anything.  Chances are, there’s a business reason behind it.

  12. I’m saddened by the exclusion of the Metamorpho Song

  13. @josh: Cool, thanks!

  14. Amazon has the price set at $14.98 and a September 28th release date. I’ll certainly be interested in getting this.

  15. This is actually pretty cool. Now we all just wait for Marvel to do the exact same thing 😉

  16. HA! Josh saw John Williams conduct the Superman theme. TWICE! heh

  17. Yes and?

  18. I prefer the theme of the first 2 seasons of Justice League over the later theme of Justice League Unlimited.

  19. I hope my public Library gets this so I can borrow it.

  20. I bought this yesterday through Amazon’s MP3s. Having given it a listen-through, it’s a great piece of memorabilia. Hearing seven different takes on Superman back-to-back is really interesting. It’s fun to compare the different time periods and their musical styles.

If you’re a fan of DC’s history in television and film, I’d pick this up. Here’s hoping that Marvel releases a similar collection at some point.
