The Best of the Week in Panels – 07.10.2013

I think this panel should be condemned. There’s serious metal fatigue in all the load-bearing members, the wiring is substandard, it’s completely inadequate for our power needs, and the neighborhood is like a demilitarized zone.

I don’t want to be that guy.

This was not only a fantastic bit of character but also a fantastically constructed scene.

Francesco Francavilla is a beast.

The increasingly crowded back-seat in the Batmobile as tribute gag to A Night at the Opera was wonderful.

Using Instagram photos to move the plot forward a few months was inspired.

I was as startled as Bruce was.

Comments

  1. JML (@twitter.com/JoshMLabelle) says:

I wonder if Samnee had any input on the layouts for Daredevil. If not, those Daredevil panels are just stunningly Samnee-esque. Rodriguez did good.

  2. But the pole still works!

  3. Excellent panel from Smallville, I really like Bart… In the TV show he always had the funny one liners. In an episode in season 4, Bart told Chloe “that he came all the way from the future to tell her that 30 years from now, their still in love.”

  4. Bottom right panel of the Young Avengers page: Are they in a shuttle bay on the Enterprise?

  5. Shazam in JL was great. I just found out that Kotobukiya are making artFX statues of Shazam and Black Adam. The best part is they are based on Gary Franks art. Check them out on Amazon.

    • Those are great, but I dislike the height of those artfx+ statues. They are almost as small as an action figure. I prefer my statues from 1/6 scale up. Still, if you have a few of those smaller ones, they look very good together.

  6. I thought the credits page in Young Avengers was pretty good, too, though it doesn’t really qualify as “art” in the way these panels are.

  7. Surprised the snake page with Bruce and Riddler talking didn’t make it. Great sequential storytelling there.

    • Yeah, I was shocked when I saw that didn’t make it, because as I was reading that issue I stopped, admired the page and said “I’ll be seeing this on iFanboy.”

    • I agree. As far as gimmicky but creative ways to tell the story I liked the snake page better than the insta-gram page. My reservations about zero year aside, I like the idea of making puzzle-like panel layouts to write the Riddler – very cool.

  8. That page in Young Avengers were they made an interdimensional leap made me “Whoa!”.

  9. I love smallville so much, the art is pretty hit and miss but after the first arc ended the stories really improved (pretty much by becoming a team-up book).

  10. So many pages from Daredevil could be the best for me. Shocked the two page spread with a nonchalant, baton throwing Daredevil didn’t get the nod. That and I loved the sequence of Matt in the bathroom. It sounds gross but the way Rodriguez took the time to stall with a panel in the middle of the bathroom was a nice touch.

    Some other moments for me:

Batman #22: The snake page of Riddler and Batman was incredible. That or the Bats swarming young Bruce.

East of West #4: Head squish!

Indestructible Hulk #10: Hulk screaming Hydra was pretty darn funny.

Wolverine #6: Logan STILL can’t figure out the title of that movie!

  11. I absolutely love Young Avengers.

  12. The car crash scene in Hawkeye reminded me of Abigail’s husband’s crash in Saga if the Swamp Thing. Francavilla’s layouts have been exquisite.
