The Best of the Week in Panels – 06.29.2011

Panels. They're exciting things to do in parallelograms.

Batman Incorporated #7

By Grant Morrison, Chris Burnham, Nathan Fairbairn, Patrick Brosseau

There are some royally effed up visuals in this issue, but Batman on a horse always rises above.

–Paul Montgomery

Flashpoint: The Canterbury Cricket

By Mike Carlin, Rags Morales, Rick Bryant, Nei Ruffino, Rob Leigh

Andy Kubert did the original design for the Cricket, but Rags Morales made him his own. 60% of the delight in this book is the fact that we get Etrigan dropping rhymes.

— Paul Montgomery

Scalped #50

By Jason Aaron, R.M. Guera

There's a lot of real purdy pitchers in this month's issue, but this panel by series artist R.M. Guera is a good representation for the whole rag. It's an exceptionally violent issue, even by   Scalped standards. But there's real poetry in these pages. True artistry. And it aint violent for nothing, either.

— Paul Montgomery

Scalped #50

By Jason Aaron, Steve Dillon, Guilia Brusco

This full page pinup smacked me in the face, and reminded me again how good Steve Dillon can be. I've seen these characters hundreds of times, but Red Crow and Shunka have an inescapable presence in this shot.

— Josh Flanagan

Uncanny X-Men #539

By Keiron Gillen, Ibraim Roberson, Jim Charalmpidis, Joe Caramagna

Hell of a line.

— Paul Montgomery

"Return to Sender" from JSA: 80-Page Giant 2011

By Steve Niles, Scott Hampton, Daniel Vozzo, Rob Leigh

Between this and that Showcase animated short, Steve Niles is the new definitive Spectre writer. A gorgeous ghost story in a stronger-than-average 80-Page Giant.

— Paul Montgomery

Xombi #4

By John Rozum, Frazer Irving, Dave Sharpe

That is a golem with a bag of bagels and those are metahuman nuns. Making this the most captivating superteam in comics right now.

— Paul Montgomery

FF #5

by Jonathan Hickman, Barry Kitson, Paul Mounts

You might be the smartest guy in the world, Reed, but you done messed up, and this is how you say that without a lick of dialog. This panel is perfect.

— Josh Flanagan

Comments

  1. Great choices but I was certain that the two page spread of the underwater base from Super Dinosaur was going to make the cut.

  2. …there’s seriously nothing fro. detective!? The entire books was nothing but Panels of the Week!!!

  3. That scalped image is amazing. Great color.

  4. Ah! The Punisher is now in Scalped!

My favorite moment in Batman INC came when we saw the outside of Man-O-Bats ‘Lair’. Even though he wants to hell the poor and suffering, they still need to pay $15 to go on their tour.

  5. Seriously though, that is a good pin up by Dillon. It’s just a shame it shows his biggest as an artist: He copies and pastes the same characters in all of his books.

  6. These are great panels. Reading my mini-stack last night was like Christmas. Not many times where issue after issue provided so many great moments. Tec’, Bat Inc., and Xombi were worth every penny and then some. I plan to re-read all 3 of these again tonight or tomorrow.

  7. Whoa…. the panel from Tec with Dick diving head first into Gotham isn’t in here…. WHAT?!

Glad to see some Xombi nuntheless

  8. I must say, Barry Kitson draws a damn fine Sue Storm-Richards.  If only he could decide on a hair style.

  9. I saw that Batman Inc. panel coming from a mile away. The second I saw that this week I stopped and yelled, “Batman on a horse!”.

  10. nice picks!

  11. I do loves me some Demon.  And yeah, Mr. Richards has a smack in the head in his near future.

@TheNextChampion – I like the big wooden nickle.

  12. I’ve been singing the praises of Fairbairn (Burnham’s colorist on Inc.) for a while now, and this week’s issue is no exception. I know DKR like the back of my hand, and I’m tellin you Fairbairn intentionally colored that panel to mirror Miller’s panel from DKR. Brilliant.

  13. That last panel of James Gordon from Detective Comics should have made the list.

  14. It is a great panel but it’s a tad spoilery.

  15. @Thechangingman  We didn’t want to ruin that reveal for anyone.

  16. Of the great panels in this week’s Batman books I’m surprised that’s the one that made it.

    LOVE the Sue Richards panel!

  17. Captain britains first close up in iron age was excellent and should be included here.

  18. @TheNextChampion  Don’t appologize, I thought it was Punisher too!

  19. Wow, Wheelhands. Good eye! Can’t believe anyone noticed that. Thanks for the props!

  20. The panel from this week’s The Goon where the vampires are pouring the glitter was easily my panel of the week.

  21. Gotta say, Jocks art in Detective is all panels of the week material and Goon too. Haven’t read last weeks pull all the way but glad to see JSA with The Spectre by Niles no less, love The Demon Etrigan too.
