The Best of the Week in Panels – 06.19.2013

I don’t even know what I’m doing anymore. I know life is short, whatever time you get is luck. You want to walk? You walk right now. Or on your own… on your own you choose to come with me. And all I know is… all I know is there’s no point in me going anywhere anymore if it’s going to be alone… without panels.

Indestructible Hulk_9_Panel

Indestructible Hulk #9

By Mark Waid, Matteo Scalera, Val Staples, & Chris Eliopoulos

Early favorite for Page of the Year.

Wonder Woman_21_Panel

Wonder Woman #21

By Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang, Matthew Wilson, & Jared K. Fletcher

This is a really good book that becomes great whenever Cliff Chiang is drawing it.

Uncanny Avengers_9_Panel

Uncanny Avengers #9

By Rick Remender, Daniel Acuna, & Chris Eliopoulos

Oh, you two!

Animal Man_21_Panel

Animal Man #21

By Jeff Lemire, Steve Pugh, Lovern Kindzierski, & Jared K. Fletcher

I love the sense of adventure in this panel and in this character.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man_24_Panel

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #24

By Brian Michael Bendis, Dave Marquez, Justin Ponsor, & Cory Petit

Everyone should have known that it would end in tragedy for these two when he came at her with the left hand. The EVIL hand!

Batman Beyond Unlimited_17_Panel

Batman Beyond Unlimited #17

By Derek Fridolfs, Ben Caldwell, Randy Mayer, & Saida Temofonte

I’m going to break our rules here and say that a young Nathan Fillion would NAIL the role of young Shazam.

Age of Utron_10_Panel

Age of Ultron #10

By Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez, Paul Mounts or Richard Isanove, & Cory Petit

This seems like a mismatch.

Comments

  1. My money’s on Galactus. 😉

  2. That Daredevil page is great and I think that ridiculous Hulk armor unfortunately takes something away from it.

    • I was thinking the same thing – the armor just… doesn’t look right. It’s like on of those focus group things where it started out: “you know – when Hulk had some armor on in Planet Hulk – that was cool.” And then they just added to it and added to it and added to it and now Hulk’s got some ridiculous “thing” on.

  3. Think we all knew that Hulk panel with Daredevil would show up. It was amazing. Love the Uncanny Avengers one as well. All great picks.

  4. My favorite panel in Ultimate Spider-Man was when Gwen slapped Miles. My favorite page in Ultimate Spider-Man is the giant two page action sequence with Cloak and Dagger.

I think Shazam Beyond needs a costume change. He’s a little to bright and colorful for the Beyond Universe.

  5. As soon as I saw that page in Hulk I knew it was destined to be a panel of the week.

  6. Captain Marvel just kinda looks like a turd in those panels. He also looks like he’s showing a little Bruce Wayne fourth wall winking skillz like we just saw in the great pages feature.

Also – who shakes with their left hand? WTF?

  7. I cannot wait to see Miles v. Galactus!!!

  8. Much as I loath to admit it, that Age of Ultron panel looks pretty boss.

  9. You really feel that hit in the Wonder Woman panel. Chiang is a master.

  10. Rick Remender had done the impossible. He’s made me like Wonder Man. I knew the that panels from Uncanny Avengers and Indestructible Hulk would make it this week. Great picks!

    • JML (@twitter.com/JoshMLabelle) says:

I’ve read back issues full of Wonder Man for years and never got why he existed. And then Remender got hold of him and made me get it.

  11. I’m fairly certain I’m missing something here, as I’ve never read a single issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, but I really don’t get why that’s one of the best panels of the week.

    • Because it’s the “Ultimate” meet-cute of one of Marvel’s enduring street-level power couples Cloak and Dagger. Dunno how much of the 616 you read, but as a Spider-Man fan, I like to think of them as a fan favorite, and this is their introduction to the Ultimate U.

That said, I hope we get to see what happens with them in the 616, since last we saw them…

      (spoilers)

Their powers have switched thanks to the touch of Mr. Negative. (see the Spider-Island mini tie-in)

    • Ha! Okay. I am familiar with Cloak & Dagger, but it’s been a loooooong time since I read them in anything (some sort of Runaways/Young Avengers Civil War tie-in was the last time, I think.

  12. Handshakes. It bugs me that 8 out of ten handshakes I see in comics are with the left hand. Is it because artists don’t think it through when they draw from a mirror or do they not realize their webcam flips the image like a mirror? I see it even in profile views.

Or is it some sort of hidden message?

    Sinister indeed.

  13. Yeah, I couldn’t imagine how that bar scene from Hulk didn’t get a mention on here. Glad that it did.

Also, as much as I love Captain Marvel, that scene from Batman Beyond makes me wanna punch him for such an awful pun.

  14. I’m not reading Hulk, but that page is great. And yeah, as lackluster as Age Ultron was, that double page spread is great — it captures Miles sense of wonder/bafflement at what he’s witnessing.

Personally, I thought that the Wonder Woman pick would be the final splash page in New Genesis.

No Batwoman by Fracavilla? How’d that happen . . ?

    • I know I would’ve thought something from Batwoman 21 would’ve made it (maybe Croc finding out Batwoman’s connection to Maggie). Oh well… I don’t think any of the main three read it anymore if that’s who picks these.
