The Best of the Week in Panels – 04/07/10

This week's panels go in for the over the top violence, the funny faces, and the… um, wow.

Uncanny X-Men #523

Uncanny X-Men #523

I know Cable's been gone a while, but… did he just massacre a Walgreens for some Honey Nut Cheerios? I mean, to be fair, the Walgreens did apparently have three armed guards for some reason, one of which was apparently chucking sodas at them before being taken down by a headshot. Still, no matter how you slice it, this is the worst "Gotta Have My Pops" commercial I've ever seen. — Jim Mroczkowski

Superman: Secret Origin #5

Superman: Secret Origin #5

Yes, technically this is two panels but it's my feature so occasionally I get to bend the rules. Here we see Clark Kent giving the whatfor to blowhard John Corben after he wouldn't take "I'm not intrested in you" for an answer from Lois Lane. How did he do it? He pulled the classic "Lets Shake Hands And You Can Try To Show How Manly You Are By Trying To Crush My Hand And I'll Just Stand Here In My Over-Sized Glasses and Beatific Smile And Destroy You" gambit. Clark's smiling face made me laugh out loud on Wednesday. — Conor Kilpatrick

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #34

Actually, I'm not sure anyone in any field has done that before. Certainly not outside of a bachelor party setting. — Jim Mroczkowski

I went to check if we needed any more panels for this week and found that Conor had already submitted my favorite moment of the week. Gary Frank’s Clark Kent is the MVP of Secret Origin. Also loved the page where Supes and Jimmy meet up for a photo op. Johns and Frank have captured everything I love about Superman with this series.

  2. I’m really not sure how to react to that last one.

  3. …yeeeeah. That’s interesting…?

  4. Buffy’s rubbing her own boobies. Nice.

  5. I’d say Miracleman and Miraclewoman beat Buffy and Angel to the sex while flying through the air by about 20 years or so.

  6. also Supes and Wonder Woman in Dark Knight Strikes Again.

  7. I’m pretty sure Cable just knocked those guys the fuck out, not kill them.

  8. I love when people correct the jokes, and that is not sarcasm.

This is rapidly becoming my favorite part of reading the books. I’m paying attention to what I’m looking at again!

  9. I have something that will just….Just make all of you laugh. Technically it’s PAGES and not a panel but….I have to tell everyone this.

Okay long story short (too late): In Batman Confidential, Sam Kieth has a storyline where a smoke monster is killing hobos. One of the many people who help the homeless out, Callie, is being targeted by the monster. Batman protects her for a full four issues and as always he falls in love with the woman. In the end (spoiler alert) the monster is learned to be someone else entirely and Callie is safe.

Then, and I guess this would be the panel, Batman suddenly turns his back for a split second. (He says 2 seconds later on) Callie then suddenly….and I swear to god I am not making this up…..She trips over a curb and snaps her neck……What!? Your telling me that the character we’ve suppose to care about, who could’ve been ripped to shreds by a smoke monster, suddenly trips by accident and snaps her neck.

……I could not stop laughing at this morbid exchange at the end. I have a feeling I am not making it sound funny. But seriously, and Ron could actually concur as well, this was one of the funniest moments ever for me. How bad is it that the only way you can kill a character is by making her trip from a 2in (if that!) curb! Why is there a curb in an small alleyway!? Just….God it makes me laugh.

  10. @TNC-Wow that is bad.  I think it’s the story that failed there, sounds like.

  11. YES! I was hoping Superman Secret Origin would be here and there it is! That moment cracked me up, also the panel where Lois makes fun of Clarks milk mustaches and bad suits made me laugh too but this one was probably a better choice since you dont have to read the entire page to get the joke.

  12. No. It’s been done. In "my super-ex girlfriend." It was off screen of course but it did happen.

*Edit: ah, guess MikeFarley is also correct.

  13. Buffy and Angel= Wow!

  14. None of you people should ever go see stand up comedy.

"No, no — white people don’t actually drive like that!"

  15. I could pick out several panels from Superman Secret Origin, simply beautiful.  The above scene, Clark and Lois in the diner, and Jimmy’s photo op are all excellent.

  16. Ooh. Space sex

I didn’t read the issue, but at most that looks like ionosex.

  18. I’m just starting the Buffy TV series. It’s a very funny juxtaposition, to hold that panel (in Season 8) side by side with the pilot for the show (where they wouldn’t/couldn’t show anyone getting stabbed. "How can you even make a TV show about vampires without showing anyone getting stabbed?" I wouldn’t have thought it possible, but they made it work for the most part.)

  19. I love that Superman sequence.  It PERFECTLY encapsulates the character.

    Nothing Cable does surprises me.

  20. @stuclach: Yep! (to the first point)

  21. @OttoBott   I just started the series also (on like episode six) and that panel makes me want to jump ahead to season eight just to see all the other whacked out stuff they can do here but not on television.

  22. A NSFW tag would have been nice.
