The Best of the Week in Panels – 04.13.2011

By the ancient laws of combat, I accept the challenge of the so called "panels." They plague our people at every turn, but from this day out, they shall plague us no more. For let it be known, that the hand that tries to strike us from this land shall be swiftly cut down.

The Infinite Vacation #2

By Nick Spencer & Christian Ward

He certainly is.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Amazing Spider-Man #658

By Dan Slott, Javier Pulido, Munsta Vicente, & Joe Caramagna

As someone who is claustrophobic, this is terrifying. But also? Funny. Mimes. (Don't mess with Sue Storm.)

— Conor Kilpatrick

Hellboy: Buster Oakley Gets His Wish

By Mike Mignola, Kevin Nowlan, & Dave Stewart

It's a cheap joke, and one we've seen often before, but that doesn't make it not funny.

— Josh Flanagan

OR

And you thought the Right Hand of Doom looked scary.

— Chris Neseman

Sweets #5

By Kody Chamberlain

The physics of this doesn't really work but it is still an awesomely dynamic image and the dramatic zenith of the series.

— Conor Kilpatrick

New Avengers #11

Those Nazis brought a gun to a whale fight.

— Conor Kilpatrick

  1. Ideally one would read Ultimate New Avengers Vs New Ultimates  and Ultimate Death of Spider-Ultimate simultaneously. It’s kinda like trying to listen to Zaireeka tho.

  2. Anyone who didn’t see Spider-Man getting shot like that from a mile off is an idiot. Would have been a better surprise if they didn’t have it on the cover of Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates. I really felt that spoilt it for me.

  3. Can’t explain why, but that Sweets shot reminds me of an action shot from Starman

  4. @vadamowens  It’s all the good hair.

  5. heh

  6. Honestly, I would’ve run both versions of Spidey getting shot. Yes, it’s the same shot (pun intended), but it seemed dirtier, a little more hardcore in the Ult. Avengers vs. New Ultimates ish.

Also, why not include Spidey’s “Johnny would’ve been proud” comment to Sue in the ASM panel?

  7. Had to drop sweets because the wait was insane, now waiting eagerly for the trade.

and i could definitely live without ultimate cap in my life, spidey shoulda let him get shot lol

  8. Totally missed out on that panel of Wade talking about…um, “spanking the ham,” with the Watcher watching in Uncanny X-Force. Hilarious.

  9. Knew that panel of Infinite Vacation would be in this the second I read it

  10. That Hellboy panel proves there are still some new angles on old things yet to be revealed.

  11. Good Chaykin: The whale
Bad Chaykin: Everything else on that page. Ugh.

There were a lot of panels that could’ve been…..we need another acronysm cause POTW is already taken.

Anyways, Hellboy had a lot of great panels. My favorite being Hellboy looking at the Half-Cow/Half-Man creature and say: “You don’t see that very often.”

  12. red headed Longshot as narrator?

  13. If you read why Sue boxed-in that mime, it’s even sweeter. Plus the short exchange between Sue and Spidey afterwards is a treat.

  14. I feel like I’m going to get railroaded for this, but I dislike Chaykin. It’s funny because you guys refer to “good” or “bad” Chaykin, and I just keep seeing the same bloated, stretchy faces with different hair colors. At least recent Chaykin. I just googled Chaykin art, and I can see some of the good in old Chaykin. But when I see Chaykin on a book, I don’t pick it up unless I have to.

  15. so many great panels in Amazing Spiderman this week.

@JimPunchfist  —i much much prefer old Chaykin as well.

  16. As soon as I saw that Hellboy panel my thoughts were along the lines of ‘obvious…but awesome!’

  17. Do comic books add 10 pounds too? Or is it just Chaykin? …. God….

I called the ASM panel though. GREAT scene. A+ for Slott.

  18. i just noticed if you were to number the faces at the bottum of that Chaykin panel from left to right… 1 kinda matches 6. 2 matches 4 (change hair color and expression). 3 matches 5 (add unruly sideburns).

Is this some New Avengers inside joke? Was it on purpose?

  19. The physics in the SWEETS panel DOES work! The glass was ALREADY shattered by the bullet holes, one little touch, and the glass crumbles down. Go ahead, give it a try. Shoot a few bullet holes in your window, then push on it with your hand. Totally works.  ðŸ™‚

  20. Chaykin owns you. You just don’t know it.

  21. I have *no* use for Chaykin at all, but I knew the whale panel was a Best of the Week the minute I saw it.
