The Best of the Week in Panels – 02.20.2013

When the Academy called, I panicked. I thought they might want their panels back and the pawn shop has been out of business for awhile.

Deadpool_5_Panel

Deadpool #4

By Brian Posehn, Gerry Duggan, Tony Moore, Val Staples, & Joe Sabino

Topical humor!

Justice League_17_Panel

Justice League #17

By Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, Joe Prado with Oclair Albert and Sean Parsons, Rod Reis with Nathan Eyring, & Nick J. Napolitano

Ivan Reis, Joe Prado (and team?), and Rod Reis (and team?) are insane.

Daredevil_23_Panel

Daredevil #23

By Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Javier Rodriguez, & Joe Caramagna

Devastating. Just absolutely devastating. This issue was an exquisitely structured emotional rollercoaster.

Young Justice_25_Panel

Young Justice #25

By Greg Weisman, Christopher Jones, Zac Atkinson, & Wes Abbott

Spin-the-bottle! See, I feel like this kind of thing would be happening ALL THE TIME when a bunch of teenage superheroes live together and hang out all the time and yet you usually never see it in the comics. This was the most authentic-feeling moment in a teen superhero book in ages.

Happy_4_Panel

Happy! #4

By Grant Morrison, Darick Robertson, Tony Avina, & Simon Boyland

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Justice League of America_1_Panel

Justice League of America #1

By Geoff Johns, David Finch, Sonia Oback with Jeromy Cox, & Rob Leigh

Was this the single best moment for J’onn J’onzz in The New 52? Yes. Yes, it was.

Indestructible Hulk_4_Panel

Indestructible Hulk #4

By Mark Waid, Leinil Francis Yu, Gerry Alanguilan, Sunny Cho, & Chris Eliopoulos

I did not expect this amount of creepiness in what has been a mostly light-hearted story but there it was and it was fantastically unsettling.

Batwoman_17_Panel

Batwoman #17

By J.H. Williams III, W. Hayden Blackman, Dave Stewart, & Todd Klein

Between the variety of art styles and ambitious panel layouts, J.H. Williams III makes just about every other artist look lazy. (They’re not lazy. You know what I mean.)

Captain America_4_Panel

Captain America #4

By Rick Remender, John Romita Jr., Klaus Janson, Dean White and Lee Loughridge, & Joe Caramagna

I love everything about this book, especially the way it looks.

And finally….

Hellblazer #300 spoilers below…

Hellblazer_300_Panel

Hellblazer #300

By Peter Milligan, Giuseppe Camuncoli, & Stefano Landini

His face says it all.

Comments

  1. just about every inch of that Batwoman book was mindblowingly stellar. what a great one.

  2. Kind of surprised to not see the panel where Matt and Foggy crack up laughing on top of the water tower, but then, that entire book was stunning.

  3. Excellent choices. That Hellblazer panel is so damn packed with detail.

  4. That moment in Happy! was so joyous. I loved it. What a great little story. Also the Batwoman team aren’t humans.

  5. The batwoman and maggie splash page was also breathtaking

  6. Camuncoli drew everything this week. And he did it well.

  7. My favorite panel this week was on Justice League #17 when Aquaman has the scepter and says “Trench. Go Home”. but what i read was, “go home trench, you’re drunk”.

  8. Does the guy who looks like Josh in the Hellblazer panel have his hand in the other guy’s pocket? He doesn’t, but there’s an optical illusion happening.

  9. The Mean Joe Greene moment was brilliant in Deadpool. It set apart from the rest of the issue since it wasn’t as hilarious as the opening.

Almost any panel or splash page was amazing from Ivan Reis in Justice League. It might have been Reis’s best issue to date on anything which is something considering how much amazing stuff he’s done in his career.

  10. Constantine’s face in the Hellblazer panel is haunting.

    • It’s very striking. Having not read the book I can only imagine what that man had to go through for that expression to befall his face.

  11. I’m glad that Cap image made it up here. When I saw that I was like that had better be in best panels of the week. And that Hellblazer image is awesome, especially because pretty much everybody who’s ever worked on the book has their name on a bottle in the background

  12. Clark was in a spin the bottle situation with Kismet and some other teenagers (who may not have been heroes) in Man of Steel #88…just saying.

  13. The Cap image is stunning.. So looking forward to getting my stack today

  14. There were so many great images in Justice League & Batwoman, you probably could have made a list of just them. My favorite from the latter is probably the “Marry Me Mags” page — very resonant.

That Captain America image is pretty cool . . .

  15. Possible Spoilers:

My favorite panel from Justice League: “I AM YOUR KING!” You tell’em buddy.

  16. I thought the last page of Saga would make the list but there was definitely an abundance of great panels.

  17. J.H.Williams is from another planet with them skills, beautiful. Throne of Atlantis is looking to be a nice HC on my shelf, that art is crazy good and I haven’t read JL since the 1st arc so an HC of this would suffice. That is MM’s finest moment, he just looks badass in that panel. I love Remender and forget he’s writing Cap and with every image, especially this one, I’m wanting to catch up with it more n more, I have #1 but haven’t read it yet. Happy! Vertigo, JLDark John Constantine.

  18. Oh mannnn that Daredevil sequence is heart-stopping!
