The Best of the Week in Panels – 01.12.2011

Panels, Panels, no one should
Terrify the neighborhood
But Panels just won't be outdone
You should realize, they can win it WITH YOU!

Red Robin #19

By Fabian Nicieza, Marcus To, Ray McCarthy, Guy Major, & Sal Cipriano

Okay, that's creepy.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Widowmaker #3

By Jim McCann, David Lopez, Alvaro Lopez, Nathan Fairbairn, & Cory Petit

If you ever have a delicate undercover mission your first choice as an operative should never be Clint Barton.

— Conor Kilpatrick

The Unwritten #21

by Mike Carey, Peter Gross, Vince Locke, Chris Chuckry, & Todd Klein

Those last three words just made my day.  They made me think of my colleague, Paul Montgomery, who is as good with and appreciative of words as anyone I know.  It was the best moment of many wonderful moments in a very strong issue of this great title.  Imagination, plotting, and just the right amount of wit are guaranteed every time.

— Josh Flanagan

Starborn #2

By Chris Roberson, Khary Randolph, Mitch Gerads, & Ed Dukeshire

I like this panel for two reasons. One, because it's dynamic and action packed. I can almost hear the explosion, the glass break, and the screams. And two, because in the midst of the action it reveals character through body language which is always a sign of great art. As both characters fall from the building, Benjamin is the picture of panic and fear and Tara is cool as a cucumber. If you read the book, you know why.

Batgirl #17

By Bryan Q. Miller, Pere Perez, Guy Major, & Travis Lanham

KRAMER: Yeah, yeah, then all of a sudden, this guy pulls out a gun. Well, I knew any delay is gonna cost her her pinky toe, so I got out of the seat and I started walking towards him. He says, "Where do you think you're going, Cracker Jack?" I said, "Well, I got a little prize for ya, buddy – " <Kramer throws two quick punches and a massive uppercut> – knocked him out cold!

GEORGE: How could you do that?!

KRAMER: Then everybody is screamin,' because the driver, he's passed out from all the commotion…the bus is out of control! So, I grab him by the collar, I take him out of the seat, I get behind the wheel and now I'm drivin' the bus.

GEORGE: You're Batman.

KRAMER: Yeah. Yeah, I am Batman. Then the mugger, he comes to, and he starts chokin' me! So I'm fightin' him off with one hand and I kept drivin' the bus with the other, y'know? Then I managed to open up the door, and I kicked him out the door with my foot, you know – at the next stop.

JERRY: You kept makin' all the stops?

KRAMER: Well, people kept ringin' the bell!

— Conor Kilpatrick

Knight & Squire #4

By Paul Cornell, Jimmy Broxton, Staz Johnson, Guy Major, & Dave Sharpe

So very British.

— Conor Kilpatrick

The Infinite Vacation #1

By Nick Spencer, Christian Ward, & Jeff Powell

This was the page where I knew I was looking at something a little special.  I was already enjoying myself, but the whole design and purpose of this page, just socked me in the face, and let me know who this Mark guy is.  The design in this book was spectacular.

— Josh Flanagan

Thor: The Mighty Avenger #8

By Roger Langridge, Chris Samnee, Matthew Wilson, & Russ Wooton

That was pretty much the face I made when I heard this book was canceled.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Comments

  1. Wow.  Those are some great panels.  A+++

  2. @Conor That may be my favorite moment in all of Seinfeld.

  3. I’ll need to call my secretary and tell her to cancel my nightmares for tonight. That Joker panel just took priority.

  4. When did Red Robin have the costume change? I like it, just curious.

  5. @hakaider  He hasn’t, it was a dream reality.

  6. @Conor & @hakaider I wish it were Tim’s costume, i really can’t get behind his current get up, which sadly is keeping me way from what i hear is a great book.

  7. @conor Gotcha. It looks very Nightwing-y, which I can get behind.

  8. @Thursday  Mine too, it’s such a perfect example of the humor of the show and what it does best.

  9. Knight & Squire is probably the most creative series no one is reading. Paul Cornell is being paid to go crazy with English references.

  10. “People kept ringing the bell!” was the best laugh I had in the entire Seinfeld run. Thank you for that memory Conor.

  11. I gotta say I’ve seen that Crowbar several times in the last few months. The crowbar I believe should be used a bit more sparingly so that it doesn’t lose the gravitas that it holds in the bat mythos, of the 3 I can recall off the top of my head, I think it was used best in that auction scene, added to the creepiness of a bunch of freaks getting mastabatorially off on an item with blood and hair on it.

Mastabatorially off in the mental sense….I think the Crowbar would chaff in a literal sense.

  12. this makes me realize my comic guy shorted me widowmaker

  13. Now that panel by Samnee might just MAKE me get the trade

  14. On Twitter earlier today I told Paul Montgomery that I hated every panel in INFINITE VACATION except for the splash pages. Wasn’t quite true, I guess. I like some other ones, including the one shown here.

  15. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    Aw, thanks, Josh.

  16. That Samnee panel feel very Cassaday-like to anyone else?

  17. @PaulMontgomery  Now with the correct word!

  18. At first I was gonna post:

“Joker in a bloody Robin costume? Being over sexualized in front of Tim? Yeah that’s Yost right there.”

Now I see that Nicieza is writing this and has being writing Red Robin for a while. So yeah…..he wrote something fucked up.

  19. Good panels,  Honorable mention here should be the very 1st page of Green Lantern:Emerald Warrirors with Kilowog.  Those who read it know what I’m talking about.

  20. What a fine batch, nice one Conor. Did you read Batman and Robin #19? More Paul Cornell goodness, with at least two panels that became instant favourites.

  21. All excellent choices, as usual. Batgirl had a few choice panels especially.

And now the Heathcliff theme song is in my head.

  22. I agree on the face made when the announcement of Thor The Mighty Avenger getting unjustly canceled came out.

  23. Conor, points to you for the Seinfeld reference!
