The Best of the Week in Panels – 01.04.2012

I didn’t think much about it at the time. Just bullshit, y’know, everybody likes to make themselves out to be something more than they are. ‘Specially in the panels underworld.

The Punisher #7

By Greg Rucka, Michael Lark, Stefano Gaudiano, Matt Hollingsworth,  & Joe Caramagna

This is a very elegant double page spread. I liked seeing both a brief glimpse of the “classic” Punisher outfit and Lark drawing Daredevil again.

Animal Man #5

By Jeff Lemire, Travel Foreman, Jeff Huet, Lovern Kindzierski,  & Jared K. Fletcher

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

— Conor Kilpatrick

O.M.A.C. #5

By Dan Didio, Jeff Lemire, Keith Giffen, Scott Koblish, Hi-Fi,  & Travis Lanham

The spirit of Stan Lee is alive and well in modern comics.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Fatale #1

By Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, & Dave Stewart

And you know what? He’s not wrong.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Swamp Thing #5

By Scott Snyder, Yanick Paquette, Nathan Fairbairn, & Travis Lanham

You know, we’re all different people leading different lives with different experiences. We have different tastes and different convictions and different priorities. But the one thing we can all agree with is that opening a door and being faced with… this… is among the worst things you can possibly face upon opening a door.

Peanuts #1

By Shane Houghton, Shane Whitlock, & Lisa Moore

We still call them comics, but there’s very little left in comic books these days that reminds me of the strips, supposedly funny, for which they are named. This is obviously, just straight up cartooning, but it made me laugh out loud, and captured a very Peanuts moment. I can just hear that Snoopy yelp in my head. By the way, she’s looking for a trace of bloodhound, which Lucy guarantees is there.

  1. Oh my god…..That panel in Animal Man is truly horrifying.

I would definitely put that OMAC spread as my favorite panel of the week, or the one where there is a giant explosion and you see a streak of blue hair hidden in the page. OMAC is just fucking good comic booking.

  2. that daredevil/punisher is classic. poster-worthy

  3. There were plenty of OMAC panels I thought could make it, but that editors note had me cracking up.

  4. Wow, that Punisher spread is amazing. I need a poster of it! I just read Animal Man 5 today, and that panel probably just made me not be able to sleep for the next week. I also like that Peanuts panel. Might need to pick up that issue.

  5. The spirit of Stan Lee is alive and (presumably) well in Stan Lee himself, also.

  6. great pics, guys.
though the “Animal Man” one is really FREAKING ME OUT. Travel Foreman…eeecchhgtt…

  7. I just made myself a little note to use the tag ‘Face Ripping’ in a future article.

  8. I Googled your movie quote because it sounded familiar, but I couldn’t place it. I just used the first 2 sentences. Number 2 result was this page. IMDb was number 4. So, you win the internet.

  9. Wtf Travel Foreman!?!? Awesome.

  10. I enjoyed the JFK quote at the beginning. Kudos to you Conor

  11. Buddy’s face reminds me of something you’d see on Metalocalypse.

  12. From top to bottom, these are all terrific. I too want that Punisher art as a poster, but without that dude in the background. Maybe Batman could take his place. I’ve always wanted a Batman/Daredevil/Punisher crossover.

  13. Quite a bit of cranial carnage in them panels, even Snoopys face took a licking.

  14. I laughed out loud when I got to that panel of OMAC and read the editors note.

  15. Absolutely fantastic panels! I loved the spread from Swamp Thing, but I wish you guys would have included the full page embrace with Alec and Abby – one of the most beautiful, emotional pages that I have seen in a while

  16. I don’t get the Peanuts one. Is she Larry Daviding it?

  17. Plenty of good stuff in Animal Man this week.

Also the panel where the rot comments on how tasty Animal Man’s wife is, was I the only one who found that hilarious?

  18. The only thing that would be worse in that Swamp Thing panel is if there were also sharks with laser beams attached to their frickin’ heads. That’s right. I made a 15 year old Austin Powers reference.

  19. Jesus, that Animal Man panel is insane. really enjoying the art and story. great Peanuts panel also.

  20. This entire feature could’ve just been made up of panels from Animal Man and Swamp Thing this week. The art in those books was THAT good!

  21. I’d put the “embrace” panel from Swamp Thing at the top of the list this week. Or any of Paquette’s amazing facial expressions on Alec & Abby throughout the issue.

  22. Travel Foreman, you are one sick little monkey – kudos!

  23. PEANUTS is now on my permanent pull list.

    Thanks, Sparky!

  24. I can see swamp thing being T+, but Animal Man just needs a mature and Vertitgo label on it! Its such a compliment when I say its Vertigo good!

  25. That Peanuts panel is so good !

  26. Ah still waiting on my Swamp Thing #5…I needs it!
