The Best of the Week in Covers – 12.05.2012

Good King Wenceslas looked out on the week’s best covers! All of them laid round about, deep and crisp and even!

Stumptown vol. 2 #4
By Matthew Southworth

A travel montage in a single, static image? That’s just cool. And the color is tremendous. But it’s that smile that has us so eager to find out what’s inside.

Fairest #10
By Adam Hughes

I don’t know what’s happening here, but that deer has me hypnotized. That’s not a joke about the placement. That deer just has a way about it that I find alarming and alluring. That eery green glow is so evocative as well.

Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm #4
By Gabriel Hardman

Moms everywhere are screaming not to do that to your face. It’s gross. It’s perverse. But most of all, it’s haunting. There’s such hatred in those eyes. Contempt. But a secret’s just about to be shattered here.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow – Wonderland #2
By David Mack

I love these, partly out of nostalgia for a not so distant past when New Age was all the rage. Like, this could be the image on a cassette case. It speaks to the kind of comic Willow Rosenberg herself might pick up, or been attracted to in a pile of comics Xander had brought to the Bronze one evening.

  1. Great choices, Paul!

Stumptown – what a terrific series and Southworth’s covers (and interiors) can do no wrong!

Fairest – I haven’t been reading this series, but it’s impossible to miss Adam Hughes and his work (btw, I noticed the cat is “missing” its right eye…is that the glowing object above the women’s right hand?)

Planet of the Apes:Cataclysm – That one hurts just looking at it (reminds me of Colder #1’s recent cover…ouch!) PoTA:C has been fantastic so far!

  2. Great choices Paul. I also really liked Darwyn Cooke’s cover for Minutemen and Dave Johnson’s cover for Fury: Max.

  3. I recently started watching the Buffy/Angel episodes for the first time (I was busy with college during the entire original run), and I’m eager to finish so I can start picking up the books. Covers like the one on that Willow book make me even more eager.

  4. Nobody does a classy pinup like Hughes. The cat on that cover is freaking me out more than the deer.

  5. I was hoping All-New X-Men #3 would wind up here. I get teary-eyed every time I see that thing.

  6. I take it that Stumptown’s cover DID end up being the final version.

  7. Forgive me for being crude, but it ain’t the deer on that Fairest cover that I find vaguely hypnotic….
Nobody draws a great-lookin’ semi-nekkid lady like Adam Hughes! 😮
