The Best of the Week in Covers – 07.13.2011

The best covers appear on the outside and to the front of books. Anywhere else would be silly.

The Red Wing #1

Cover by Nick Pitarra & Rachelle Rosenberg

There's a great deal of gravity in this book, with it's bold, crisp design choices. This stark cover carries over into the dual cover pages, a shock of white following the opening teaser. Here we get a broken helmet with its curious design and ruby lens. It's an invitation in a way.

American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #2

Cover by Sean Murphy

Each of the covers in this limited series have this sexy-cool Spy Who Bit Me vibe, and tell me this isn't a summer blockbuster you'd drain a jugular to see. WWII intrigue. A warehouse of Tesla devices. A fiery plane. And of course the folding and unfolding of leathery wings.

Amazing Spider-Man #665

Cover by Paolo Rivera

The spectacular photorealism is one thing. That there's a cascading "AAA!" as he's falling backwards is another. And the difference makes it a 5 star cover.

Unwritten #27

Cover by Yuko Shimizu

The light of the Golden Age shines forth in a Fritz Lang world.

Comments

  1. “Here we get a broken helmet with its curious design and ruby lens. It’s an invitation in a way.”

The Aztec seal is what sold me. 🙂

  2. I love both this and panel of the week.  After reading the comments of panel of the week and seeing someone complain about spoilers, I was wondering…  Would it make sense to have this come out on Thursday and the panel of the week on Friday.  That way it gives one extra day to get caught up?  I realize it’s on the readers to police themselves and not click on panel of the week if they haven’t read their books yet.  But I think it makes a natural progression, Thursday is the outside, Friday is the inside.  Just a suggestion.

  3. That Unwritten cover may be my favorite in a long line of excellent covers.  And they are typically very story relevant.

  4. I want a poster of that Spider-Man cover.

  5. These are great and all, but Francavilla’s cover to Detective this week is basically cover of the year and if not that one, then it’s Jock’s for the next issue.

  6. The Spidey cover is terrific, but that Red Wing cover is just top notch stuff to me. It says so much and uses white space just as well as any cover I’ve ever seen.

  7. All of the Unwritten covers are awesome, keep an eye on the next two month’s. I have seen previews and they are gorgeous. Also, Francavilla’s covers(No matter the book) are vintage awesome, and should always win.

  8. Glad to see someone got the Fritz Lang vibe to the Unwritten cover. Good call.

  9. These were all excellent. I saw the Spidey cover in the store and it leaps off the shelf. Really a great idea and great execution.

  10. To me Yuku Shimizu is the proper Vertigo successor of cover art to James Jean.

  11. the Yuko Shimizu cover is amazing…

  12. the spider-man cover really hits you hard after you read the issue
