These are the greatest covers of this week, professor. That’s my answer.
Spaceman #7
By Dave Johnson
I don’t know that that sidearm is regulation. But I don’t much care. What matters is that the astronaut versus caveman thing is playing out right before us, and gravity is involved. Or isn’t. It’s lack is involved. A great, striking image and a truly elegant cover treatment besides.
Prophet #26
By Brandon Graham
Brandon Graham has a knack for combining the organic with the inorganic, and that’s on full display here. Is this a scrapyard? A post-industrial tumor? Or something in between? Either way, a strangely unsettling combination of mech and muck.
I, Vampire #10
By Clayton Crain
Whatever happened to Casual Friday?
Scalped #59
By Jock
Deceptively simple. But this is fire in all its fury. And it’s perfect.
How is the Batman Inc cover not on here???
I found the composition awkward. It appears disorganized, in my opinion.
I agree with Paul. Had it just been the Medusa head, Talia and Batman it would’ve been a fantastic cover, but everything beneath them looks almost as though it was put there by committee.
WHAT seriously Paul? How can you ignore Burhman batman INC cover? Are you MAD!?!?!
Quite so.
Hahahaha!! Awesome 🙂
I didn’t like the Batman Inc cover very much, I agree it looked disjointed and sloppy. However, I am not sure why the Batman Dark Knight cover is not included, I loved that.
This article always makes me read things i normally wouldnt so kudos
Jock can do no wrong, the man is a master.
Agreed
Sweet! I’m actually reading all of these currently, Good stuff
I’m glad to see a Dave Johnson cover there, I think his consistency & ability to set the reader up for what the story is about is truly a wonderful talent!
Is there some line work going on over the face of that vampire in the Clayton Crain piece? It actually looks better than his normal stuff. I wouldn’t mind if he kept that kinda thing up.
When is the trade being put out for Spaceman?
I second. I’ve miss on earlier issues and decided to trade-wait on this, but man, it’s getting long and it looks so frickin’ good!
Novemberish.
HC is out in November, not sure on soft-cover!
My mistake HC is out in October!
If I’m digging on this current sci-fi wave, should I check out Spaceman? I think it’s the only one I’m not picking up. I’ve never read Azzarello so I’ve been keeping my distance.
The future-slang is challenging, but well worth it. Very interesting book.
When I picked up Scalped 59, I actually thought to myself, ‘well, it’s not going to make this week’s best in covers.’
If I’d only chosen one this week, it’d be this one.
For me, this cover is more about economy of design than anything else. It’s the placement of the text, the minimalism. Whoever does the design treatment for Scalped (don’t have any in front of me) deserves as much praise as Jock on this one.
The moment I saw that Scalped cover I knew it’d make its way here, it’s such a masterful design!
That Scalped cover reminds me of the artwork in The Downward Spiral, the Nine Inch Nails album. The bleak and minimal, but somehow very shocking and loud at the same time. Love it.
That’s exactly what I thought.
What about the American Vampire cover I thought that one was pretty cool and might show up here?
Am I being too much of a snob if I say that the Jock cover reminds me of Rothko?
Nope.
A warm feeling came over me when I saw that Scalped cover this week. Could also be this mid-west heat wave. Great covers Paul.
This month’s Scalped cover is great, but wait until you see the one for next month!
