The Best of the Week in Covers – 02.01.2012

The Best of the Week in Covers could very well have been a cat person, but they’re allergic. So we’ll never know.

Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes
By Gabriel Hardman

I would go to the multiplex and see this movie eight times. A suitably grand finale to this tale of shadowy intrigue.

Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes
By Declan Shalvey

Dig the contrast here. Citizen Aleron rises above the savagery of his fellow gorillas. Jordie Bellaire’s colors on this series are beyond sublime. Sub-lime. Like, she’s not even grazing the lime at this point.

The Twelve #9
By Paolo Rivera

This week Rivera out-pulps Sean Phillips with a bold homage to the dime novel thrills of yore.

Locke & Key: Clockworks #4
By Gabriel Rodriguez

A dark mirror to the previous issue’s cover, this image plays with the idea that our understanding of Dodge is gradually being called into question. Who’s truly to blame for all the horrors pervading the town of Lovecraft?

Comments

  1. So much good ape-age. You’re right too, Betrayal woulda made a great Ape movie. Even better than some of the old ones… like the one with the nuclear cult people? That shit was just weird. How’d that get greenlit?

Beneath the Planet of the Apes. And they were awesome. They had atomic hymns and mind powers.

    • It was weird in a really good way. I love Beneath, probably my 3rd fav after Escape and the original.

    • Beneath is totally still my favorite. Its got this great anti war anti religion message that makes me, a born and bred heretic, really excited.

on another note, this series was awesome, but my shop didnt have this last issue. which sucks because those covers freaking rule.

  2. I need to pick up that Betrayal trade as soon as it comes out. I’m really looking forward to it.

I’ve been trying to trade wait on Locke & Key, too, but I think I’m going to have to break down and grab the issues. That series is incredible and I don’t have the willpower to wait for the fifth trade. Paul’s comments about this issue’s cover is enough to get me thinking (way too much) about the universe Mr. Hill (and his very talented artists) has created.

  3. Normally, I don’t really care which cover I buy, but I had to stop and think about it in the shop when I saw both Apes covers. I went with the Hardman cover, but both are great. Looking forward o their next mini.

  4. The lack of Uncanny X-Force this week is sad 🙁 Haven’t seen a cover that awesome in a long time

I looked at that one really hard for a good while. Wolverine’s pose just bothered me. There’s something off. Consider it an honorable mention though.

  5. Paul is hiding sub-liminal messages in these posts. Like his anti-lime agenda is buried so deep below my liminal mind it needs Mapquest to find it.
