The Best of the Week in Covers – 01.16.2013

These covers know how to work it.

Conan the Barbarian_12

Conan the Barbarian #12
Cover by Massimo Carnevale

One of my favorite covers of last year featured these two in the thrall of lust. Now comes the rage and agony of loss. I love how the focus remains on Belit, beautiful even in death, while the rest of the image veers into abstraction. Even the part of her gown that trails into the gestural portion of the image is rendered with as much detail as the form in Conan’s arms.

Saga #9
Cover by Fiona Staples

I just tried to see if you could scramble the letters in Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ names to get “Right Said Fred” and came up wanting for some D’s. But that’s okay. Cuz maybe the real inspiration is that one Janet Jackson Rolling Stone cover. Anyways. Delight in reading this in public. Hold it up in front of you for all to see like a spy in a farce.

Comeback #3
Cover by Michael Walsh

I olny juts notcied taht teh letetrs were miexd up. Congition is facsinaitng. It also looks like a poster for a flick with James Coburn and trumpets in it. Sold.

Wolverine MAX #3
Cover by Jock

This is either the perfect encapsulation of Wolverine’s feral ferocity or what the delivery person sees when they deliver a package to my house. I go out there with full intention of doffing my hat or even hugging them, but then I see the box and the beast takes over. They’ve taken to wearing riot gear lately.

  1. I miss the Stalk. Cant wait for Comeback to hit trade. Loved the first issue.

  2. That’s one of the best pics of Wolverine I have ever seen!

  3. Such a good cover from Jock, He’s such a good artist…..

    Cover king!

  4. Jock FTW!

  5. Jock channeling Senkiewicz, I love it!

  6. I love that I’ve reached a point where I can look at a cover and go, “Oooo. Jock.” without even looking if it’s him.

  7. “Here Comes Jock: the Artist Without Fear!”

  8. Jock for the win…..Jae Lee’s Phantom Stranger was a nice change from the previous 3, Constantine smoking a cigarette as the Phantom Stranger vanishes on a white backdrop worked, as well as the JLDark logo too. Also really liked Batman 16 variant, the riot/city on fire & Bats holding a broken Arkham riot shield looked great with rich color to emphasize fire at night.

  9. I’m gonna go out on a limb here, and wonder aloud if Saga is maybe bringing in more new, previously non comic book, readers than the entirety of the new 52…I think grown women who aren’t nerds (especially, anyway) are reading Saga.
And I think Fiona knows this.
