Superman Motion Picture Blu-Ray Anthology Will Fly

On June 7, you can get the Superman Motion Picture Anthology in beloved high definition Blu-ray. It will include all 4 Superman movies with Christopher Reeve, including both versions of Superman II (original and Donner cut), as well as Superman Returns, which is apparently one of the most hated superhero movies of all time, starring Brandon Routh, who was not, at the time, a vegan.

The set it chock full of 20 hours of extras, and hopefully some of them will really go into detail about Otisburg, and the scutted plans for the Otis spinoff movies.

That might not be true. So, just check out the extras. Take your time. Maybe get a beverage ahead of time. I know one thing, that commentary on Superman is fantastic.

Comments

  1. Amazing looking set. I really hope it’s a decent price, or that I have won the lottery by the time it is out, it looks great.

The SRP is $129.99. No listing on Amazon yet, though that ought to take it down below the $100 level.

  3. I am such a suck for the Blu-ray Double-Dip. I am already mentally re-arranging shelf space for this damn boxed set. I wonder if I can get a discount if I promise to send Superman IV back to them?

  4. I am glad I have held off on the superman blu rays. This looks great.

  5. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

I only own Superman Returns on DVD and none of the originals. I think I might grab this. Either in June or when it drops in price.

  6. The original was one of my first Blu-Ray purchases, it looks great. I don’t need the rest.

  7. For those wanting just the movies, most of them are already available in the bargin bin at any walmart or costco… collectors may also want to wait until the new ‘ultmiate edition’ including the to be released movie eventually comes out

  8.  Tom Mankiewicz and Richard Donner’s Commentaries on the DVD set remainins an absolute treasure.

  9. Man.  I’ve been waiting for these.  I bought the DVD tin a little while back, but it was in the bargain bin by then.  This might not wait so long, though it bugs me they’re doing it before the other movie.

  10. I might have to pick this up, I was scared away from the Ultimate DVD collection due to manufacturing issues.

I’m kind of looking forward to watching IV having avoided it all these years.

  11. i own all the originals on one of those 4 on one DVD editions you get from Target. All those Cartoon/short extras and features may make this worth it.

@rjspring—thats several years away. Think about that for a minute.

  12. Woah!  It will include the deleted Krypton sequence from RETURNS!  Very exciting.  I’m there.

  13. I want to pick it up just to hear the director’s commentary on III and IV.

Like what was their mindset going in thinking that Richard Pryor was the ‘perfect’ choice for III and why IV was so god awful. It’ll be like Joel Schumacher apologizing for the entire two hours of commentary for ‘Batman and Robin’.

  14. No Supergirl movie?!?  What a rip!

  15. I’m pretty sure i’ve bought Superman: The Movie in every medium with the exception of Laser Disc and Beta Max (am I showing my age?).  Seeing all the things that will come with Blu Ray version makes me think I’m going to buy it again.  I’m not sure how much more stuff they can put on there.

  16. Plus, I don’t think the US has a relase date yet.  If you look at Amazon’s UK site, you can pre-order it.

  17. it looks like much if not all of the bonus content is from the dvd ultimate edition. ill probably pass on this since i have that. i got superman on blu ray and it doesnt quite work. Its TOO clear. you can see the seams in the krypton dome and you can see the edge of the glue holding on brandos wig. with a lot of older movies, the high def transfers accentuate the flaws. if they dont go in and digitally remove some of those things, it can be distracting.

despite that, the opening credits in high def (especially with the volume cranked high enough to scare the cat when the S shield flies by) are astounding.

  18. I got that 14 DISC metal tin of the five films (seven when counting the other versions of 1 and 2) and all these extras on sale a few years ago.  Like Josh wrote, there will surely be some new combo after The Man of Steel comes out in 2012.  I think I’m going to hold off.

  19. I like that they’re including the original opening to Superman Returns, which I assume is the Krypton footage.  Nice that it’s finally getting released since we’ll never see Singer’s Superman Returns 2, which kind of makes me sad, as I’m sure it would have been a lot better.

  20. I already have the set on standard.  The only difference here is that they’ve included the never before scene opening to Superman Returns…  UGH!!  I can’t buy the whole set for that…

And for the record, I liked Superman Returns!  I’m excited for the reboot, but I think Brandon Routh gets unfairly criticized.  He woulda been much more appreciated had Singer made him punch something.

  21. Returns was only hated because stupid people believe Superman has to beat the shit out of something in order to be interesting. With that said, they’ll love Snyder’s version.

  22. @AquaPimp – Of course folks want to see Superman punch something! That’s what Superman does!  Was the Space Shuttle scene awesome?  Hell Yea it was.  Was Superman creeping around and spying on Lois a tad creepy? Yes.  Bryan Singer made the flick he wanted.  He got to make a Singer version of Richard Donner’s Superman.  Hooray for real estate schemes!

  23. I’ll probbly pick this up because its a must. But I know that there will be a day hopefully some day not to far from now we can go see a new Superman Movie and all agree that it was brilliant.

  24. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Amazon now has it up for pre-order. 90 bucks and change.

  25. @PaulMontgomery  Thats sounding like a good deal considering how much blurays are still.

  26. Am I the only one who liked Superman Returns?  Really wish they got to do a sequel, feel like that’s where Superhero movies really manage to hit their stride (especially bryan singers eg, x2, superman 2, dark knight, spiderman 2)

  27. @AquaPimp82  –a butt kicking Superman is much better than one who just walks across the country and talks to people…

  28. “What more can anyone ask?”

    Bring it On!”

    I’m there.
I don’t care. I’ll re-gift the silver box this year. This I’ve gotta have.

    P.S. @DaveCarr – QFT.

    @MontNJ – – Funny.

  29. @Gabe: I liked Superman Returns, but I wanted more.  I really liked Routh as Superman and Clark.  It just didn’t have that wow factor that I remember feeling with Superman I and II.
