SDCC 2012: Brian Wood is Writing STAR WARS

The con hasn’t even opened yet!

Starting in January, when C-3PO wails, “Thank the Maker!” he won’t be referring to Jake Lloyd or even George Lucas. That’s because Dark Horse Comics’ new adjectiveless Star Wars ongoing will be written by Brian Wood. Apparently hand-picked by LucasFilm, the author of DMZ and The Massive is headlining an all new comic set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away during the original Star Wars trilogy.

We’ll have more details as the story develops, but for now, here’s a quick tease…

And here’s what Wood had to say on his Tumblr blog:

I’m writing an ongoing Star Wars book for Dark Horse. Not just any Star Wars book, this will be called “Star Wars”, and will be set in the original trilogy, using the classic characters, and will pretend like its 1977 and no other films were every made or books ever written aside from “A New Hope”. Carlos D’Anda is on art, Gabe Eltaeb on colors, and Alex Ross on covers.

Your move, other publishers of comics!

Comments

  1. I hope he writes it using modern vernacular. “C-3PO, chill the fuck out man.”

  2. It’s VADER TIME!

  3. Oh, damn… Looks like I’ll be picking up a Star Wars book!

  4. “… and will pretend like its 1977 and no other films were ever made or books ever written aside from ‘A New Hope’.”

    Ok. I’ll bite.

    Sigh. If only.

  5. You had me at Star Wars Wood…

  6. Wow. I always try to keep one or two minis on my pull list at all times to scratch my Star Wars itch, but I don’t think I will need any others while this is being published.

  7. I’m sad that midi-chlorians are now longer in continuity in the Wood-StarWars Universe.

    • Meh… I don’t think they are suggesting they are changing canon, just not going to mention it is all. You can write 1,000 stories in the SW universe, none of it will ever erase what Lucas did in Phantom Menace.

  8. So, kinda like the old Marvel Star Wars comic, then, right? I was just talking about this the other day, about how fun it was in the 70s and 80s when no one cared about licensed properties, so it was a hugely creative playing field: ROM, MICRONAUTS, STAR WARS, GI JOE…

With some of the Planet of the Apes comics and now (maybe) this, are we seeing a return to that? I hope so. Could be a fun time for comics.

I’m hoping for that too. “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

Okay, it’s not entirely like that. But you know what I mean.

    • For no reason at all, I picked up the entire run of ATARI FORCE from the quarter bins at a con recently. So, you know, when they’re ready to license that sucker out again — I’m on it! I got this one!

    • Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

I vaguely know what that is!

    • Avatar photo Jeff Reid (@JeffRReid) says:

José Luis García-López did the art on Atari Force, right? I love that guy. Need to track that series down. Then, I need to find time to read it.

    • Man, if this is anything like the new Planet of the Apes stuff I am all in.

    • That’s right, Jeff! 😉 It may have been Wondercon or C2E2, but I stumbled across the ENTIRE run, which was, like 22 issues with an annual and a special for just a few bucks. I’m not gonna say it’s the greatest thing ever, but the Garcia-Lopez art alone was worth the few bucks I paid. 🙂

    • You should make some money off that thing. The cheapest full run on eBay is running $30 or so with shipping. Nice work on that deal!

  9. Oh, fuck yeah! Can’t remember the last time I’ve been excited about anything Star Wars related!

  10. Best news in comics this summer. Star Wars, Conan, and The Massive? WOW.

  11. by “classic characters” does he mean Tag and Bink?!?!?!

  12. Uh oh… The image changed from “cover” to “teaser”. Hope no one got in trouble!

  13. I for one, would love to see Luke back in his rebellious, angst-y days when he used to bulls-eye womp rats in his T-16….

seriously though, this sounds pretty cool. I might have to check this out.

  14. I AM SO HAPPY.

  15. STAR WOODS!

  16. star wars books have been getting better and better(dark times, ghost prison, blood ties).
    hope this continues that trend.

  17. Finally. Something to look forward to on a Star Wars book other than Dark Times!!!!

  18. I am a die hard Star Wars fan that loves ALL of the movies and follows it to whatever media to goes to. So I know most of the backround stories and history. However, I love the idea of reading a Star Wars story and not knowing what is coming next. Wood can do whatever he wants and not have to worry about anyone else’s story, but the first movie. I am super happy about this. May the Force be with you all.

  19. I have never, ever considered picking up a Star Wars book. The original movies were always enough, & that was that. Not any more. With his recent work on Conan & The Massive, I am super pumped for this. The artist looks great too.

  20. I am loving Brian Wood on Ultimate X-Men so count me in!

  21. Mr. Wood seems to be staying pretty busy these days

  22. Yes please!

  23. Just when I thought nothing could get me intrigued about a Star Wars comic ever again…

  24. Any idea when this will be coming out?

  25. So i guess he won’t be writing one of the books he’s writing right now. My pick would be X-Men. I wouldn’t want him to drop his creative work and Conan. And Ultimate X-Men needs him more then regular X-Men.

  26. YES please!

  27. I wonder if this will continue on “Infinities” style, because that could be really cool.

    I’m in.

  28. This just got me excited about a Star Wars comic for the first time in ages.
