SDCC 2011: Marvel’s Next Big Thing Panel: Avengers Academy! Hulk of Arabia! Avengers Origins! Black Panther! The Twelve!

So it begins! This evening saw the first big announcements from Marvel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011. We'll be hearing a lot from the publisher over the next few days, but some of their Next Big Things can now be unveiled.

Let's start with the return of The Twelve

J. Michael Straczynski is back with artist Chris Weston to finish what was started back in 2008. The dirty dozen of Timely Comics' Golden Age are back. Jugding by these Paolo Rivera covers, it might've been worth the wait.

November

The Avengers Academy sees a roster change! It's like Friday Night Lights. Sometimes, kids just graduate. Or die or whatever. I'm just pleased Finesse is still around. Finesse is rad.

New School! New Students! New Teachers! New Shocking Storyline! After the events of FEAR ITSELF, the Academy relocates to the former West Coast Avengers compound and opens their doors to all the teen heroes of the Marvel Universe! As Hank Pym welcomes many surprising faces to the Academy, an Avenger is murdered—and every student is a suspect! Who was killed, and who’s behind this horrific act?

It all begins in Avengers Academy #21, as writer Christos Gage sends Marvel’s new generation of super heroes against their greatest threat yet!

Black Panther vs. The Kingpin!

This November, it's all about T'Challa and the Fat Man. That's right. The Black Panther is facing off with the top cat of Hell's Kitchen, the Kingpin!

He’s faced Kraven the Hunter and survived Fear Itself, but now T’Challa is on a head-on collision with the one man who may be able to destroy him and Hell’s Kitchen—Wilson Fisk! The Kingpin, the new ruler of the Hand, resurfaces with Lady Bullseye and Typhoid Mary at his side—and the Panther’s in his sights!

Acclaimed writer David Liss & rising star artist Shawn Martinbrough kick off this new arc in Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive #525!

Hulk of Arabia!

October

When an old friend of General Ross is killed, the Red Hulk, against the wishes of the US Government heads to the Middle East, seeking revenge with Fortean hot on his trail. Except when Red Hulk’s plans conflict with the strategies of Steve Rogers, the Secret Avengers launch into action and try to intercept Ross from creating an international incident. But when they encounter the enigmatic and deadly Sultan Magus, their mission (and their lives) may be compromised—permanently.

The next big Hulk arc begins here Hulk #42, as the acclaimed team of Jeff Parker and Patrick Zircher introduce a major new player to the Marvel Universe and send the Red Hulk on his most personal, harrowing journey yet.

Comments

  1. That Vision cover looks amazing!

  2. Like the fresh roster of the Academy and the Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver Origin.

  3. Man, TBA, whoever this guy is, is getting a lot of work these days. Wish he’d share.

  4. Here’s the deal JMS.  You finish The Twelve, that’s one gripe against you I’ll drop.  Even if it sucks, even if you drop the ball, even if it doesn’t live up to the promise of those earlier issues, I’ll let that one go.

  5. really excited about the Avengers: Origin project. The art in the Ant-Man/Wasp one looks great, and i’m also excited about Kathryn Immonen on Thor.

  6. Yay, more The Twelve! These Avengers Origins books have some cringe worthy names attached to the writing, if the art looks stellar. Hope they go better than the recent X-Men origins books which were pretty lame. The Vision book looks boss. And Kathryn Immonen might make me buy a Thor-igin rehash.

  7. Those Origins look amazing..and I hope Avengers Academy gets back to its former greatness since Fear Itself stalled it dead ( actaully Fear Itself stopped the momentum of most good Marvel titles)

  8. Oooo I might have to check out that Avengers Origins: Ant-man and Wasp.

  9. Avengers Origins – can’t wait, especially for the Ant-Man and Wasp. The Vision looks great as well!

  10. That Vision cover and art owns this page. I kept scrolling down and things got better and better.

  11. Other then The Twelve news none of this really excites me.

But the art for ‘The Vision’ story does look great.

  12. The origins covers look amazing.  I’ll only be picking up the ones about characters I already like, but that is some pretty art.

  13. I’m not to interested in Black Panther and the Kingpin in Wakanda, BUT we get to catch up with Typhoid Mary post Initiative!?  SO THERE!

  14. Am I the only one who’s totally jazzed by Hulk of Arabia??  With Patrick Zircher?  Oh shit, that’s going to be awesome.  God bless you Jeff Parker.

I’ve totally been digging what David Liss is doing on Black Panther and to see him team up with Shawn Martinbrough is pretty awesome.  I’m definitely down for that.

Not totally in to any of the other announcements.  I loved The Twelve when it was out, but I already ebayed my issues long ago, and I feel like supporting it is voting for the fact that it was ok it took 3 years off.  As for the Origins titles, I’m iffy.  Some of the art looks great, but honestly, I’ve read three seperate Avengers origin stories plus the origin from the TV show.  I’m not really sure what new stuff is going to be brought to the table.

  15. @tazz  Man, I am glad to hear someone else say it.  So many good storylines were pre-empted by Fear Itself, it feels like it’s time to get back to the good stuff.

  16. Those avengers origins issues look pretty rad!

  17. THE TWELVE! FINALLY!

  18. Zircher is awesome.  When that HC comes out, I’ll be on it!
