SDCC 2011: GIMME! The Ten Best Toy Exclusives

This morning I was laying in bed playing on my iphone, not thinking about much as I woke up from a very satisfying sleep. My dog was snuggled at my side and without a care in the world I poked around the internet… until suddenly I sat up wildly in sudden realization and projected some expletives from my oh so ladylike lips.

San Diego Comic-con is really freakin' soon.

This year it kind of crept up on me. For once I haven't been procrastinating on my cosplay and all the other things I do and I have been mostly prepared for it for a couple of weeks now, even so far as having a pile in the corner of my closet of outfits to take with me to San Diego. This level of preparedness is very uncommon for me as I am the queen of last minute, so perhaps that's why SDCC suddenly became a looming week away monster.

Along with this realization of "ohcrapgottascramble" came a few more:
1) I have not written ANY articles about SDCC this year, which is some sort of travesty.
2) Due to a considerable lack of funds, I have been pointedly avoiding the exclusive toy news.

Tick tick tick… DING! Suddenly a eureka moment! Why not combine the two? Then I could look at toys without feeling sad and guilty, because it would be for the greater good of the ifanboy readers! Obviously, I'm some sort of genius woman.

If you're unfamiliar with the San Diego Comic-Con exclusives, it goes a little like this:

Since SDCC is such a massive convention, many toy manufacturers make special limited edition toys that they debut and sell at SDCC. Nearly every booth at SDCC has SOME sort of exclusive, even if it's not a toy (including comic books, clothes, and I've even seen special SDCC underwear), but toys get most of the attention. And rightly so, because the toy exclusives are generally pretty incredible things that make me salivate wildly and whine like a kicked puppy.

Here are my ten favourite SDCC toy exclusives for 2011. Watch your wallet.

Revenge of the Jedi Death Star SDCC Exclusive Box Set from Hasbro

I'm not going to lie, when I first laid eyes upon this exclusive I "squeed" a little bit inside. Several Star Wars figures re-issued in vintage style packaging AND in a giant Death Star? Be still my little heart. Not to mention for the first time SalaciousCrumb and the Imperial Mouse Droid will be officially carded figures. YES.

The Sucklord's Lavender Guardsmen

For those with a bit more off kilter tastes comes the Lavender Guardsmen. Last year this guy had pink Stormtroopers but I wasn't willing to drop 130 dollars on one. The price tag on the Lavender Guardsmen is 69 (tehe) and at only 40 available toys I'd say it's a good deal. It's a definite conversation piece!

Doctor Who TARDIS Bobble Head with SOUND! from Enterainment Earth

Nothing quite embodies Doctor Who like the TARDIS, and what better way to show your love for this staple in science fiction than with a fantastic TARDIS bobblehead mounted to your dashboard… and it has SOUND. Oh, my heart, be still.

Marvel's Sentinel from Hasbro

Hasbro has a great line up of toys this year and this epic Sentinel is no exception. It has great detail and comes with its own carrying case and an original comic by Joe Quesada. It's a little steep with a price tag of 59.99, but is truly a great collector's item.

Scott Pilgrim from Mezco

I drooled over nearly every Scott Pilgrim toy I saw at SDCC 2010 and this year is probably going to be the same way. I already love this comic accurate representation of Scott Pilgrim with a determined "Imma kill you you stupid ex" look on his adorable illustrated face.

Sue Storm Bishoujo Statue by Kotobukiya/Marvel

I'm a HUGE fan of both the Kotobukiya and the Ame-comi bishoujo statues from Marvel and DC (respectively), and if I had enough money I would probably own every single one available. This year's SDCC features two exclusives – Sue Storm & Emma Frost. However I wasn't too impressed with the Emma Frost one (she's merely see-through) so if I have to choose one it will definitely be this awesome shiny Sue Storm.

Limited Edition Glowing Kuro from Camilla D' Errico

I love it when artists release exclusive toys and Camilla D'Errico is one of my favourites (not to mention a friend of mine!) She has great whimsical manga inspired style and this cute little guy stays in that vein. He actually glows in the dark, and you can pick him up for 59.99 at Camilla's booth.

Spider-Man Mighty Mugg from Hasbro

I try to pick up at least one Mighty Mugg at every San Diego Comic-Con because they are great collector's items and look adorable on the shelf, with vinyl toy asthetics meeting comic book awesomeness. This Peter Parker Spider-Man is definitely going home with me.

SDCC 2011 My Little Pony from Hasbro

This wouldn't be a Molly McIsaac article without the inclusion of a My Little Pony exclusive. I prefer this year's pony to last year's by lightyears, as she's a little gothed out and adorable. I can't wait to bring her home with me, and she's totally within my budget at 14.99!

Poison Ivy by Kotobukiya for DC

This is the most amazing bishoujo statue I think I have ever seen, with incredible detail and a playful look on her face. I think I'm going to have to actually drop the funds on this one because I already see a perfect spot on my shelf for her.

So there you have it, a tiny tiny look of some fantastic toys to come at SDCC 2011. If you're not going, check ebay and toy blogs for opportunities to scoop up some of the exclusives a couple days after before they rocket in price!

Molly McIsaac is scrambling like a chicken with its head cut off to prepare the final touches for SDCC, but she will definitely be there… dead or alive. Stalk her on twitter to find out her whereabouts and read about her SDCC adventures.

Comments

  1. I’m glad I don’t buy toys anymore. I’ve got four statues and I’m all set.

  2. Oh, man, that Peter Parker mugg sure is neat.

  3. @Bryce31  what are the elite 4 that are in your collection?

  4. Scott Pilgrim, the Kotobukiya statues, and Mighty Mugg are what i like the most. Realistically though, the Mugg is what i would drop cash for so Cap, Galactus and Iron Man would have some company on my shelf.

I do wish that the Mighty Mugg SDCC exclusives were characters that arent as popular as Spidey and Wolvie though.
It would be great to have a Mugg of Rocket Raccoon or Moon Knight.

  5. @JohnVFerrigno  A Green Lantern: FIRST FLIGHT DVD Maquette, a Batwoman Bust and a Golden age Flash and Superman from Dark Horse.

  6. @Bryce31  Nice!

  7. I’m kind of sad that Mighty Muggs are only SDCC exclusives now (for the past few years anyway), but at least that saves me money 🙂
Also, that Spider-Man comes with a little cloth mask that you take off, which is kind of cool

  8. Poison Ivy & Scott Pilgrim. Want!!!
