SDCC 2011: Either We Just Had a Massive Stroke or IDW Just Announced a STAR TREK & LEGION OF SUPERHEROES Crossover

It's finally happened. My brain has migrated to Capestrano. SDCC 2011 has barricaded my nueral pathways.

Unless of course I haven't lost my faculties and the image to the right is in fact real. There it was in my inbox. IDW has annunced a Star Trek/Legion of Superheroes crossover in six parts. The series is written by Chris Roberson with art from Jeffrey and Phillip Moy. Phil Jimenez will provide covers for each issue, with variants from the likes of Mike Grell, Keith Giffen, and Gabriel Rodriguez.

Fascinating…

"STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPERHEROES tells the tale of the original crew of the Starship Enterprise, who beam down to a planet only to discover that the planet isn’t their intended destination, or even in the right universe. At the same time, a group of “Great Darkness Saga” Legionnaires inside a time sphere find themselves cast into the 23rd century, but it’s not the 23rd century as they know it, either. STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPERHEROES is a galaxy-spanning adventure that draws both teams together to face a menace that includes Khunds, Klingons, Borg, and other threats that aren’t quite as they should be. The egalitarian United Planets in one universe and a United Federation of Planets in another is now the Imperial Planets of Terra, a dark empire focused on war and conquest, and that’s just the beginning for this special series."

But here's my favorite bit from the press release:

“Nothing like kicking off our first foray into the DC Universe with a story that spans dimensions and centuries,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief and the lead editor on this crossover. “As a huge fan of both of these teams and the eras we’re playing with here, as well as an admirer of the talents involved with this tale, I couldn’t be happier.”

"First?" You mean..there could be…more?

Star Trek/Legion of Superheroes #1 hits shelves this October.

Comments

  1. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHWHAT!?

  2. WHAAAA?!

  3. wow

  4. OMFG!!! I am not a buyer of Star Trek or LOSH, but I will buy this. So smart by DC and IDW. I’m loving this.

  5. Cool! Reminds me of the late 90s Star Trek/X-Men crossovers. Count me in!

  6. SOLD

  7. This sounds like a horribly ridiculous idea that I really, really want to read.

  8. Great to see the Moys getting more Legion work. Jeffery did an impressive five year run of Legionnaires where he only missed a handful of issues. Phillip ended up doing most of those issues, but since their styles are the same I could barely notice.

  9. incredibly bizzarre and awesome at the same time. So curious.

  10. never been much of a Trek fan, but putting the Legion in there will get me to read it!

  11. The Federation meets The Federation

  12. Didn’t see that coming.

  13. This one makes some sense and I’m suprised they didn’t do it sooner.  I’m in!

  14. I don’t like either of these things but I am somewhat interested, will this be new reader friendly?

  15. This is something I might look at in the shop but don’t see myself buying.  Used to be a LoSH fan, and consider myself a fan of ST:TOS, but this is not chocolate and peanut butter.  These do not go together to create something better, IMHO.

  16. I can just see it now – this does well and leads into a Sgt. Rock/G.I. Joe crossover, or a G.I. Joe/Checkmate crossover vs. COBRA/Kobra. I would buy that in a heartbeat.

  17. Might be worth buying just for the Phil Jimenez covers.

  18. Won’t this just confuse all the “new readers” that the DCnU is supposed to be attracting?

  19. Yes. Want. Now.

  20. @amircat You said EXACTLY what I was thinking!

  21. Head..exploded..

  22. WTF?
    great darkness saga?
    on it!

  23. Two greats tastes that taste great together! I wonder if the LSH will be the  mature / older versions or the naive / young versions…? I could see Kirk getting his mojo going if they are the former 🙂

  24. Crazy, likey.

  25. This is weird….

Although if this leads to a Doctor Who/Green Lantern tie-in then I’m all for it.

  26. Years ago, in college, I was not a comic book reader anymore. One day, I was in a Waldenbooks in the mall when out of the corner of my eye I spied STAR TREK VS. X-MEN, the most insane thing I had seen in years. It had a “Dr. McCoy?” “Yes, Dr. McCoy?” in it. Then, for a weekend, I was a comic book reader again.

    More power to ’em.

  27. I’m really loving the newfound boldness of DC comics. Star trek/Legion of superheroes crossover? Who would’ve thought this was possible? I just hope they do another crossover which actually interest me ’cause I’m not really a trekkie nor a legionnaire.

  28. This idea was tickling the back of my head the last year or two ever since I noticed the United Planets/United Federation of Planets similarity….I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to see it…and I’m glad there are others on my wavelength!  I’m in, I can’t wait!

  29. @BC1  I would totally love a G.I.Joe / Checkmate crossover! Who do we talk to to make that happen? Checkmate (both volumes) was one of those things I was ALWAYS trying to get people to read.. maybe a Joe crossover would get a few.. especially given how good some of those new Joe series are.

  30. @SkipSpacer  No because they’ll see “Star Trek with…what the hell is the Legion of Super-Heroes?” and then pick up the book to find out.

  31. Avatar photo captamerica101 (@Autobot_Hunter) says:

yeahbutwhat?! has anyone made a “highly illogical” joke yet?

  32. Can’t wait for Brainiac 5 and Spock to interact!

  33. Talked to Roberson about this after hours . He’s stoked, and it sounds fantastic. The right writer and artists are doing this!
