SDCC 2011: DC Comics Panels Preview

San Diego Comic-Con 2011 is days away and if you're planning on attending the Super Bowl of comic cons, you're probably overwhelmed with planning your days at the convention.  With hundreds of panels spread out across the 4 days of the con, we've done our best to help guide you to the must-see panels of the con.

If you search the Comic-Con programming schedule for DC, you'll find over 20 panels featuring DC creators, products and topics.  You might be wondering, "Which ones are the ones I absolutely can't miss?"  Don't worry, we've got the ultimate guide to the DC Comics panels at the San Diego Comic-Con and it all boils down to one thing: the DC Reboot.

THURSDAY, JULY 21

2:00-3:00 DC Comics – The New 52
Moderators: Eddie Berganza/Dan DiDio Panelists: Bob Harras, Eddie Berganza, ???
We dont' normally go to panels at conventions because we are too busy shooting interviews or talking to people and, let's face it, they can get pretty tedious what with mot questions from the audience being about things that panelists can't answer. But this year, with all the hubbub over the DC Reboot in September, we decided that we were DEFINITELY going to go to the DC Nation panel, if only to witness what was sure to be some epic fan melt downs at the microphone. But DC has thrown a curveball! There is no DC Nation panel this year. Instead, there is a daily "The New 52" panel. That's right–every day of the con you can go and yell at DC editorial about your favorite characters changing or going away entirely.
Room 6DE

3:15-4:15 DC: Batman
Moderator: John Cunningham; Panelists: Mike Marts (editor), Grant Morrison (Batman Incorporated), David Finch (Batman: The Dark Knight), Scott Snyder (Detective Comics), Peter Tomasi (Batman & Robin) Patrick Gleason (Batman & Robin), Gail Simone (Batgirl), Judd Winick (Batwing, Catwoman).
Want to know all about how the new DC Universe effects the residents of Gotham City (and beyond?) then this panel is for you. Here you can get very specific in your yelling and focus solely on all things Bat-related.
Room 6DE

5:45-6:45 Vertigo Editorial
Moderator: Karen Berger/John Cunningham; Panelists: Bill Willingham (Fables), Scott Snyder (American Vampire), Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth), Michael Allred (iZombie), Mark Buckingham (Fables), Les Klinger (Annotated Sandman), Rebecca Guay (A Flight of Angels), Colleen Doran (Gone to Amerikay), and many others.
Hello! Itchy and Scratchy Land! Open for business! In the midst of all the hoopla surrounding the new DC Universe, the Vertigo imprint continues to chug along, quietly ducking rumors of its death and putting out some of the best books in comics. Go show 'em some love, why dontcha?
Room 6DE

FRIDAY, JULY 22

11:15-12:15 DC Comics – The New 52
Moderators: Eddie Berganza/Dan DiDio Panelists: Bob Harras, Eddie Berganza, ???
Just in case you missed out on the yelling about the apparent absence of Wally West in the new DC Universe on Thursday.
Room 6DE

3:00-4:00 DC Superman
Moderator: John Cunningham; Panelists: Matt Idelson (editor), Grant Morrison (Action Comics) and J. Michael Straczynski (Superman: Earth One)
It sounds like Morrison is reinventing Superman from the ground up for the modern audience by bringing him back to his 1930s roots so this could be a lot of fun listening to Morrison talk about his vision for Superman while some of the audience freaks out.
Room 6DE

4:15-5:15 DC: Justice League
Moderator: Bob Wayne Panelists: Eddie Berganza (editor), Geoff Johns (Justice League), Jim Lee (Justice League), Dan Jurgens (Justice League International), JT Krul (Green Arrow), Eric Wallace (Mister Terrific), Francis Manapul (The Flash), Brian Buccellato (The Flash), Philip Tan (The Savage Hawkman) and more!
There is a better than fair chance that this will be the biggest book in comics come September so you might as well find out what they've got in store plus you can go and yell about the collars.
Room 6DE

Comments

  1. Oh, I’d like to be a fly on the wall for those 52 panels.

I hope Morrison is inebriated, he’s a hoot.

  2. Hopefully DC posts them as podcasts like they did last year.

  3. Someone needs to ask whats happens to Wally West. As far as I can tell he hasnt been brought up anywhere

  4. I’d hope people will refrain from yelling, but I guess that may occur.  It’d be so much nicer to hear “Are there any plans to bring in more JSA characters?” as opposed to “Why’d you ditch the JSA?’

I guess that would be wishing for a little too much.

  5. It was more than just last year DC posted all there panels as podcasts they’ve done it for at least four years i wish marvel would do the same. But who’s kidding who everyone wants to know what the heck is going on at DC right now?

  6. No Green Lantern panels, you say?  Guess we’re avoiding the movie backlash?

  7. These are going to be incredible. I’ve only been to one DC Nation panel. But I was able to get more than a good taste as to the type of fan who steps up to the mic with a question.

I can only imagine what the guy from Emerald City last year who was upset about DC not utilizing Power Girl’s full power set would have to say now.

  8. This is where you watch crazy people…

  9. would love to some video of the Q/A for the 52 panel, I don’t think I’m buying much. Batman, (Batman Inc when it comes  back out ) Action, maybe JLA. I love the character of Green Arrow but the current writer is staying and I think he’s doing a horrible job, plus they are altering the character. That old hippie/liberal looks gone forever. Replaced by a youngster he’d mock. Gopggles?

  10. Maybe they are going to make Green Arrow more like the character in Smallville?

  11. I think they are, so no more fun Ollie confronting fat cats. Dan Didio said he’s going to be more of a weapons master, so its Ultimate Hawkeye. I really like the all too human Green Arrow armed with just a bow and getting in way over his head. Meltzer run was the best so far in my opinion. I own lots of the original art work from that, even got Hester to do a GA sketch for me.

    Oh well, good bye Ollie.
