PREVIEW: Winter Soldier #1

The kids just can’t get enough of Bucky, can they?

On February 1, with Winter Soldier #1, the familiar team of Ed Brubaker, Butch Guice, and Bettie Breitweiser have sprung Bucky from the Gulag, and ditched all that red, white, and blue stuff, and forgotten that he was dead. Again. They’re sticking with the gun and robot arm though. The former Captain America is back to being Winter Soldier, who is positively gangster, and once again, not dead.

Turns out ol’ Buck trained a bunch of Russian goons to kill real good, and now he has to fight them, because that’s what you do in a Marvel comic book. Also, Black Widow will be there, because Bucky always has a lady with him.

The pages look good, and if ever there was a character for Brubaker to write, it’s this one. Get ready for leftover Cold War action.

Also, hey, it’s a Lee Bermejo cover!

Comments

  1. Looks good. I’m down.

  2. Can’t wait for this!

  3. Bettie Breitweiser is magic.

  4. I think I’m dropping Cap and picking this up. Looks good.

  5. Since I’m not reading any other Cap family books, this’ll be my Cap related book to pick up.

  6. Hope it looks like this every issue

  7. Wow I am sold! This looks like a gritty version of James Bond. Can’t wait!

  8. Dumb military fun, Black Widow doing the splits and facepalms? I’m in!

  9. Amazing what a colorist can do for art. This looks so much better than when he was on Cap. Bettie Breitweiser is amazing. Marvel has some of the best colorists around

  10. New creative team needed or Brubaker needs to go in a different direction across the line. That Winter Soldier & Red Menace arcs were cool but it’s become a bit stale. Not even buying the cap ongoing. New art direction? Thoughts?

  11. I’m excited, but if its 3.99 I’m getting the hc’s.

  12. I think I’m gonna try this one, sounds like a good idea ?
I really loved the work Brubaker did with Criminal, hope this is at the same level…

Great creative team, this looks very promising. Funny how several of Marvel’s 2.99 titles are also some of Marvel’s best (Daredevil, FF, Punisher, Thunderbolts, Journey Into Mystery, Avengers Academy, Black Panther…). Yet they generally sell less than their 3.99 counterparts. But I digress… Back on Winter Soldier: I’m very excited. I think this character is in Brubaker’s chords so I expect good things story-wise, but I would buy this title on the art’s strength alone.

  14. Looking forward to it.

  15. Looks and sounds promising. I might give this a try. The art…especially when combined with the coloring is really sweet.
