PREVIEW: The Punisher #1 with Covers from Neal Adams & Sal Buscema

Punisher #1As if the promise of the new, upcoming ongoing series The Punisher, written by Greg Rucka with art by Marco Checchetto, wasn't enough, but then Marvel turned it up a notch by providing us with this sneak preview of the first issue along with the various covers.

Why is this such a big deal? Well The Punisher #1 will feature a cover by Bryan Hitch, which is always a treat, but the real exciting news is the variant covers by legendary artists Neal Adams and Sal Buscema! Now we've seen Neal Adams make his return to Marvel with the upcoming New Avengers #16.1, but it's great to see even more work from him.  But the cover I'll be chasing will be the one by comics legend Sal Buscema, who last I heard was limiting his work to just inking, so it's great to see him providing pencils for this first issue of The Punisher as well!

As far as inside the issue itself, we're told that this first story will be The Punisher's most violent mission ever as he takes on New York City's newest crime organization, The Exchange.  Greg Rucka is bringing The Punisher back to the war on crime that we know so well and it's sure to be one to remember, especially with Checchetto's dynamic art style and these legendary covers makes for a great combination

The Punisher #1 goes on sale on August 3, 2011 and will sell for $3.99

Comments

  1. A new Greg Rucka book is always cause for celebration!

  2. well… I’m a Neal Adams fan, and Buscema is a legend of course… but I don’t like either of those covers.

  3. That Adams cover is what we call in these parts “badass”

  4. Does the Punisher hold the record for most #1’s?

  5. Aquaman does @ sammorgan

  6. First page looks like The Punisher meets Se7en.

  7. Sad to see Remender go, but this is like replacing apple pie with blueberry. Both are so awesome but differrent.

  8. As long as there is a written promise that there will be no FrakenCastle, im in.

  9. Hitch’s cover is the best, I am so pumped for this series!

  10. It looks like Castle has lazer guns judging from Adam’s cover.

  11. I used to really dislike Sal Buscema’s work on Spectacular Spider-Man, but 20 years later and I am liking him more and more. Must be some form of nostolgia. In any case, if it is cover price, I’ll opt for Sal’s cover.

  12. I don’t like this trend of guns being pointed at my face to sell something.

  13. Adams can do interiors on the Punisher whenever he likes.

  14. Can anyone say BLACK BOOTS?! Finally! Now if they could just update the rest of his costume a little. That white belt doesn’t seem very practical. Give him a military web belt with some realistic attachments. I may actually check this out.

  15. So, this is the 616 Punisher right?  So he’ll interact with the rest of the Marvel U in some way?

  16. Hey, it’s a crossover between The Punisher and Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt from ‘Se7en’. Awesome!

  17. Art looks better than I expected and I love Rucka. Not convinced yet though…

  18. @Francisco    Ha! Thats funny, I thought 3rd panel in page 2 detective has a Morgan Freeman expression going on.

  19. @Francisco, I meant @ finbarbat ……but a new Rucka book is always stirs my curiosity too. Also, I gotta agree with Sider Titan, Hitch’s Cover is the best, Neal Adam’s is chock full of classic material but his cover reminds me of Romita Jr’s Punisher face with Star Wars blaster lasers coming at us.

@TheDude007   If you look at the right of the cover you’ll notice the backside of a hand and its not the Punishers, so technically he’s not pointing the gun at us, he’s shooting someone. Hope that helps but I feel ya on the comment, its the same way they end to many movie trailers with the gun pointed at the audience accompanied by the sound of the gunshot, sometimes it makes the trailer enticing, others redundant.

  20. I wish we could edit our own comments after being posted, not only did I comment back to the wrong person 1st, I said “is always stirs” in my 2nd one to correct that, F@#N typo’s!

  21. One more thing, well two….Checchetto’s interior art is excellent, especially his cityscapes and point of origin or angle like on that last page but the Punisher should be a $2.99 book, in fact, they all should be. I’ll bet they would sell more copies (enough for a higher profit than current) by brining in more just curious readers that wanna try a book but not at 3.99. I guess thats three things.

  22. Im so excited for this. Rucka is one of my favorite writers. I want too say that the first issue is $3.99 amd the rest of the issues are $2.99
