PREVIEW: Mystery Men #1

Back in February, Marvel asked "Who are the Mystery Men?" And since Ben Stiller and Wes Studi were nowhere to be found, we all assumed that The Mystery Men were Golden Age Marvel characters who would be the subject of some upcoming mini-series by Marvel Golden Age specialist Ed Brubaker.

Well, we were half right.

Mystery Men #1 (of 5) hits store this June from Edgar Award-winning wrtiter David Liss and artist Patrick Zircher. Here's how Marvel describes the mini-series:

Before Captain America, before The Twelve, there was The Aviatrix, The Operative, Achilles, The Revenant and The Surgeon! What drives these five heroes to pull on masks and take to the rooftops of Manhattan? What dark conspiracy not only brings them together, but threatens to tear the America apart?  On the hunt to solve a brutal murder, our champions will smash their way from gleaming penthouses of privilege to squalid alleyways, as the full horror of their enemies’ schemes unfolds! Get ready for an action packed, edge-of-your-seat and in-continuity super hero adventure like no other when Marvel’s first champions take the case this June!

I love how they made a point to highlight the fact that this in-continuity. They've figured you people out. I'm surprised they didn't end the copy with "… edge-of-your-seat and in-continuity super hero adventure that matters!" Anyway, here's a preview:

Comments

  1. I’ll give it a shot in trade. If this was Brubaker, or even Rucka, then I’d definitely buy it.

Art is good though, but way too many word balloons in the first couple of pages.

  2. There should be a question mark in that logo, no?

  3. Looks interesting, Just might give it a try.

  4. I’ll definitely check this out — because it’s IN CONTINUITY!

Or, you know, because it’s a fun time period, and I like the look of these characters. Curious to see how Liss works here — I didn’t really care for the issue of his Black Panther that I sampled, but these sample pages seems pretty well balanced. I like the fun, noirish dialogue and art. Good stuff.

  5. These preview pages are a nice taste. The characters look damned cool, I love this era as well so new heroes with a pulp fiction slant already have me interested. I’ll give it a try for sure.

  6. Looks like good stuff. Count me in.

Still wish they would finish The Twelve dammit!

  7. @TheNextChampion  to many word balloons? comics are made for reading smh

  8. yeah this has looked interesting from the start. i’m interested!

@TheNextChampion  –really? There are hardly any there!

  9. @TheNextChampion  Are you the Next Champion of……no attention span? I would never complain about too many word balloons. I hate when I buy a comic and i read it in 5 minutes. I want more dialogue/story, not just to look at pictures.

I am definitely getting this. I love the idea, the art looks good, and I’m a sucker for old-timey stuff as it is. I’m super-excited for this one!

  10. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

There are 11 word balloons in the first four pages. That is in no way a lot. I think it looks like fun.

  11. if you think this has too many word balloons don’t try to read the Walking Dead. You’re brain will explode with all those words!!!

  12. since i was probably the only person who liked the Marvel Noir line (most of it at least).  This will be a more than healthy replacement. I hope Bogart and Bacall make an appearance.

  13. This looks like something that u may regret missing out on

  14. @4iiii  @wallythegreenmonster  @JohnVFerrigno  @PaulMontgomery  @wallythegreenmonster  I think you guys are getting trolled!

  15. @kennyg  we are? I don’t consider TNC to be a troll at all. I think he just speaks his mind, whether people are going to like it or not. Sometimes I agree with him, sometimes I don’t, but I always respect he doesn’t just say things to seek approval or disapproval. he always seems to say what he legitimately feels, independent of how people will react.

  16. Thanks for all the kind words…..and not so kind words?

Also, I probably should’ve said narration boxes instead of word balloons.

  17. @JohnVFerrigno  Aww, I’m just teasing. As you all noted, it was sort of a baseless criticism, but I suppose it does come down to opinion. Variety of opinion is the spice of life.

Sometimes I am convinced TNC is my doppleganger!
