Phil Noto’s Unofficial X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Poster Absurdly Better Looking Than Official Promotional Art

Artist Phil Noto's long been a revered talent within the industry, but recent Tumblr activity has amped up his level of acclaim amongst fans. He's a mainstay of our weekly Sketch Up feature, and I've even seen actual celebrity photographs described as looking "like a Phil Noto girl."

This morning, Noto posted his take on the X-Men: First Class ensemble, inspired by comments from fellow artist Jamie McKelvie. And for a drawing composed on a lark, it looks a hell of a lot better than the film's official promo posters.

Pink and orange, my friends. And dig on that lettering. Wouldn't you kill to see something like this in a multiplex lobby?

A few more Noto pieces you may have missed:

Medusa, Queen of the Inhumans

Blade Runner

Daredevil and Elektra

Emerald Eyed Girl

Dark Knight Returns

Uncanny X-Force

Star Mashup

  1. Of course its better….its designed. Its thought out, it has a point of view and the artist hand is present. Spectacular poster. My only knock is that maybe its a touch weak on the conceptual side, but i still get a better feel for the time period of this film than the official art.

The problem with most movie Key Art is that 3 or 4 main companies control all of the big budget stuff, and they treat the art direction like your choosing a value meal at a fast food chain. Instead of considering design, they are mostly only interested in photoshop techniques and recycling the same visual gimmicks over and over again. Its really the dregs of concept, design and creativity.

  2. btw….NOTO rocks, thanks for the Tumblr link. He’s becoming one of my favorite illustrators.

  3. That Star Wars sketch if I didn’t find it so awesome, would be considered sacriligious in my mind. I am a Star Wars fan, but I did absolutely love the Star Trek reboot (when is that sequel coming out?!?!?!). But Star Wars > Star Trek any day. Hell the filmmakers of the reboot admitted to taking hints from Star Wars in order to help make it look awesome! That’s how heavenly awesome Star Wars is!!!!

@SpiderTitan  You just went through a whole thing there.

  5. I want a Phil Noto ’60s spy book so freaking bad!

  6. I love that Daredevil and Elektra myself, and I’m not even a big fan of the characters themselves. I wish that Noto would have the opportunity to draw a nice 5-page, well-choreographed fight scene with the aesthetic of that DD and Elektra drawing and NOT have some writer crowd it out with unnecessary word balloons. I can only imagine how awesome that would be.

  7. Phil Noto > Jesus

    This shit is *badass*!

  8. @pyynk – absolutelty – turtlenecks and bump-its.
Too bad Beautiful Killer was only 3 issues. i loved that.

  9. love the medusa piece

  10. Noto’s so good he makes me feel bad about myself.

  11. That Blade Runner is amazing.
I third the 60’s spy book with Noto as the artist.

Paul, has iFanboy ever considered putting links on where the general public can go to buy this art in their articles, or do I need to just get my lazy ass off the couch and search the “so called” internet myself? Sometimes it can be a little daunting trying to figure out where a certain artists work is for sale.

Maybe an article all on it’s own that just points us in the right direction to the sites’ favorite artists, or would that be too much of a conflict of interest for Ron (since he likes to buy so much)?

    Thanks

  12. I think that is a good poster. BUT:

If he took the helmet off Magneto and got rid of the ‘Aquaman’-like rings to show their ‘powers’ then it would be a lot better. The helmet makes it look silly and the rings make it too busy of a poster for me.

@Baldrick  I am not aware of these particular pieces being up for sale. Here I linked to the original Tumblr page. I suppose you can submit questions about availability there. In Sketch Up articles we always link to the artist’s personal blog or Deviant Art page. Note that sometimes we’re talking about digital sketches, so originals might not even exist in physical reality. If you see something you like, hit those hyperlinks and you might find a sales page.

  14. @PaulMontgomery  Thanks very much.  I guess I was just being lazy.

  15. The Bladerunner piece is glorious, retaining hints of Scott’s admission that Deckard is actuallya  replicant himself.  Inspired.
