After the successful launches of their first year of Season One titles, Marvel is bolstering its introductory line with solo graphic novels spotlighting its three biggest characters: Thor, Iron Man and Wolverine. And the publisher is getting some exciting names to do it.
Announced earlier this week at the Diamond Retailer Breakfast in New York, Thor: Season One, Iron Man: Season One and Wolverine: Season One will be coming up in 2013. New-to-Marvel writer Matthew Sturges will write Thor: Season One with Pepe Larraz penciling. Writer Howard Chaykin will be teaming with artist Gerald Parel on Iron Man: Season One, with Thrilling Adventure Hour writers Ben Acker and Ben Blacker going with artist Salva Espin on Wolverine: Season One.
The Season One graphic novels are a line launched earlier this year which are intended as standalone graphic novels that modernize the early days of the company’s top heroes in a format and style modern readers can best understand. While initially derided by some in the industry, there have been some great works in the line including X-Men: Season One and the recent Hulk: Season One.
Have there been any good Season One books? I picked up Daredevil’s but didn’t end up buying it.
I think the X-Men one got Book of the Month here.
The Hulk one looks good and I remember poeple commenting favorably on it. Fred van Lente writing, Tom Fowler on art.
Hulk and X-Men were by far the best of them, but only in terms of art I thought. Dr Strange was surprisingly good as well – Greg Pak and Emma Rios I think.
The best is the Doctor Strange just on the talent alone. Next is Hulk…..the rest I would avoid.
X-Men was excellent (and that’s from a non-X-Fan), Ant-Man, Hulk and FF were okay too. The others I thought were pretty poor.
I loved Hulk and Doctor Strange. Haven’t checked out X-Men yet but it’s pretty.
Yes, cause when I think of Wolverine I think: “We need a new version of his origin”.
Chaykin writing Iron Man sounds like a good pairing though.
Okay i had no interest in Wolverine Season One until I saw Acker And Blacker writing it. I only know them from “Thrilling Adventure Hour”. Does anyone know of any comic work they have done before?
Dennis Hopeless and McKelvie put a yeoman’s effort into the X-Men book, for sure.
