New York Comic Con 2011 Extends to Four Days

We just got word that October's New York Comic Con 2011 has been extended from three days to four. The new dates for the 6th annual NYCC are Thursday, October 13 through Sunday, October 16, 2011.

The convention has grown a little bit in each of its six years, and is quickly becoming the SDCC of the east coast. In 2010, 100,000 fans flooded the facility over three days, making trips to the restrooms less about walking, and more about submitting yourself to the riptide of humanity. As with last year, in addition to NYCC, the Jacob Javits center will also host the Cultyard and New York Anime Festival that very same weekend. So expect even more people with giant cardboard halberds.

We'll be there. How 'bout you?

Tickets go on sale February 7th at noon EST.

  1. I enjoyed NYCC last year, but the highlight was easily the ifanboy party.  It was wonderful seeing everyone.  I’m seriously considering going up that weekend, but skipping the con.  I might buy a Friday pass.  Saturday was simply too crowded to enjoy.

  2. I just got this e-mail.  Pretty excited.  Just to clarify though, Thursday will be for press, exhibitors and those who buy 4 day passes.  I think the bigger news is that Friday will be a full day for those with weekend passes.  I can only hope that this alleviates the lines on Friday morning lines.

  3. YAY!!!!!

  4. Darn I have no clue if i will have classes thursday during the fall. Might be worth it just to shop the dealers room.

  5. That’s good for me. I didnt get a chance to go panels last year. May be I can go to some of them this year. Plus more pics of people in cosplay.

  6. Ugh. It’s clear now that NYCC is trying to kill us all.

  7. @josh  Agreed.

  8. @stuclach Good call. I may buy a day pass or something and just go up for 2 days. You ought to hit Heroes Con, though. Early summer, not too far from you.

  9. I went this previous year, covering events for a friend’s website. Sure, I got in all 3 days with a Press badge, but ultimately you realize you really can’t cover a lot in three days. You can’t even attempt it. But, 4 days, doesn’t sound so bad. The biggest problem I had this year was that it was my first HUGE convention and I was not used to the amount of people there. I know all about the rules of a convention but having that many people there, especially that Saturday…ouch.

On the plus side I got to meet the Ifanboy guys. Even got a picture with all three of them. I was SOOO tempted to have Conner sign my Comic Drawer Box that I got there, because I found out about the things from the video show when Conor did a segment about them.

Looks to be fun this year, and if I’m lucky I can meet Paul Montgomery this year too.

  10. 4 days?? and on sale February 7th? didn’t tickets go on sale during the summer last year?

  11. @zombox  I’ve heard good things about Heroes Con.  I’m may give it a shot.  Depends on the wife.

  12. I’m pretty excited that it’s 4 days now – at least that should greatly alleviate the pressure for tickets on Saturday. If they can spread that chaos over 2 days (Friday/Saturday) instead of just Saturday should help alot. I’m also pretty excited my pic was used for this post! It’s a win win weekend!

  13. hELL YES.

  14. Yay, NYCC starts on my b-day!  Now I’m definitely taking off and submitting myself to the madness that is “New York does comics, but also takes up an entire corner of the Javits Center with anime and, uh, intriguing costumes”

  15. Who’s that in the center of the photo?

  16. @WilliamKScurryJr  That’s Marques, a fixture of all our New York meet-ups.

  17. I remember NYCC! It was that day where they packed me into a giant room that I was unable to move or see anything because it was so filled with smelly people.

But I did get my hands on a WHITE LANTERN HAL JORDAN FIGURE!

  18. I’m curious as to whether adding another day will be good or not. I mean, no matter which way you slice it, it’s a good idea.

What I’m talking about it is, man the creators are gonna be just out of it by day 4. This year most of them were wiped by the third day. And you get the eventual “Left early” excuses.

The plus side to an extra day is not only the possibility it could thin out the crowds (not by much, but enough to be helpful) and make those dealers tables a little more accessible. A lot of great tables were in the middle of heavy traffic and made it harder to get something. If you’re someone like me who enjoys going to the 50 cent bins, NYCC was not to the place to test your luck. Because the traffic is so heavy and I’m not used to it, it took a while to get used to.

Also, if you’re lucky, on Day 4 when dealers just want to sell stuff and not lug it back…super deals!

I got 2 Comic Drawer Boxes for $20 because they didn’t want to carry the demo boxes back.

  19. I hope that they spread out the guests so they are there on Thursday also.   Most of the important guests were Saturday.
