Marvel Asks… Who Are The Mystery Men?

Marvel Comics sent us this teaser image with absolutely no other accompanying information.

I don't see William H. Macy or Ben Stiller anywhere in there. What I do see is some rather gorgeous artwork. What do you see? Let's figure this out together, before Marvel inevitably spills the beans, so we can all feel good about ourselves.

Comments

  1. I’m guess men of mystery???

  2. Don’t tell Tom Brevoort about this, he’ll just fuck it up.

  3. I hope we get to see the Bowler!

  4. My guess? A brand new icon title by Hickman

  5. The artist’s “Z” signature…. Patrick Zircher? This feels like a Brubaker project… amalgamations of pulp heroes, placed historically into the Marvel Universe? They don’t strike me as existing characters, but it’s obviously tough to say at this point.

  6. Actually, that’ll be another announcement–missed how it said Marcel right on the image!

  7. I’m with Daccampo. It sounds like a Brubaker project, and I’m betting that’s John Steel in the front.

  8. Hmmm… Jim Hammond (Original Human Torch) up front, there?

  9. Any possible chance this is a collection of actual pulp characters?  The guy in front kind of looks like Flash Gordon and the guy in the fedora and mask might be The Shadow.  I have no idea if they’re in the public domain or not.

  10. Brubraker + pulp heroes = sold!

  11. I hope one of the characters eats a sandwich in every issue like New Avengers. In fact, I won’t support this book unless this happens.

  12. @Tork  –i may be wrong, but i think Flash Gordon is controlled by someone. I”m pretty sure The Shadow has some rights issues as well. I know that DC published some Shadow stuff in the 90s so i’d be shocked if Marvel did anything with them.

i don’t get the feeling that Marvel would care enough about old golden age pulp characters to go there anyways. Feels more like a DC thing.

my guess…..a bunch of obscure characters that need a comeback…

  13. Will there be Flame Carrot?

  14. Oddly enough, the Ben Stiller movie was just on. First time I’d seen it years.

  15. The one with the bandages reminded me of Sam Raimi’s Darkman…

  16. is that Shark-boy in the background?

  17. What looks like the Rocketeer in the back there could be the long awaited return of Sammy the Fish Boy! I see this being a pastiche book treading similar water as First Wave (wherever that went!). Feels Brubaker-y. Curious to see what becomes of this.

  18. Don’t know who. But they look awesome!

  19. Hope its as good as the movie.

  20. The crest on the dude’s chest reminds me of the Black Knight’s (Dane Whitman).

  21. Could they #*@&ing finish The Twelve first? PLEASE?

  22. @kennyg  That’s not really Marvel’s decision. Should they not do any more books like this until JMS decides to finish that one series?

  23. Yes the image from Patrick Zircher good eye by dacampo.  I thought it was Deodato at first before i looked at the signature.

  24. it’s fresh in my mind because I just heard about it last night, but Andy Diggle is working on a non-superhero Marvel title. while this does look superhero-y, it is a possibility.

  25. This could tie in to the Captain America movie as rumors continue that the Invaders would appear but not the classic group.  John Steele likely would be one of them.  Union Jack might be the guy with the hat and the mask.

  26. I betting that is The Fin in the back ground, you know Timely’s OTHER aquatic hero from WWII, which makes a masked Asian character very interesting addition indead… a new Japanesse America hero, or could this be a hero for Imperial Japan, i.e. an enemy of the American heroes?  Or is this something different, a secret society  working to manipulate both sides?   There was a Japanesse spy who actually recurred in several diffent Golden Age books, mostly fighting the Human Torch and Toro names Matsu… always wanted to see more of his story…

  27. Sure, I’ll play.  Miss America, Black Marvel, Whizzer, the Thunderer, and the android Human Torch.

  28. The Fin makes more sense than Whizzer, good call Mutant Sentry.  Could also be the Silver Scorpion instead of Miss America.

  29. if this is a Hickman icon line that would be really exciting. But alas i feel this is going to be more like “the Twelve”, but i could be wrong.

  30. I say it’s a Greg Rucka book.

He’s back at Marvel and he hasn’t done a major project yet.

Also, if The Spleen is not one of the members then I’m out!

  31. I’m interested in the art.

  32. Very intersting.
@Jdudley, that’s a very exciting guess, as is your guess @dacampo. I shall have to keep an eye out for this.

  33. I’d bet money that this is going to be Brubaker’s follow-up to The Marvels Project, a prequel involving John Steele (who is clearly the guy up front in this cover) and other heroes of Marvel’s rarely seen pre-Golden Age Pulp-era.

  34. One of those seems to be The Fin from Daring Mystery Comics

  35. What’s with all the Brevort hating? – seems pretty fashionable right now.

  36. Actually that looks like a red shirt with a gold collar thing on the character in the forefront… could be Golden Age Human Torch…  And the hooded character could be the Thunderer (aside from Golden Age stuff not seen much aside from the last page of Marvels #1 and a few episodes of the 90’s Spider-Man cartoon)

  37. Looks like a Brubaker project to me too, Steve Epting style art but the Z suggests someone else but similar art style still. Jim Hammond the original Torch is a good guess @CaseyJustice

In any case I love the title with pulp appeal and is intriguing, if it makes pick of the week or even on the top ten pick of the week list, I’ll check it out.

  38. @JSAkid  Well, the second issue is out this week (David Liss and Patrick Zircher, btw, and the characters are all original creations), and I’ve gotta say this is one of the more pleasant little surprises from Marvel lately. I don’t know if it will make any top ten lists, but I highly recommend checking this series out. I know Paul liked it a lot too. Great pulpy fun — this is what DC’s First Wave wishes it had been. 😉
