Mark Waid steps down as BOOM! CCO, Returns to freelance writing

When veteran comic book writer Mark Waid shocked the industry and announced that he was joing BOOM! Studios — a company that most comic book readers had not heard of at that point — as the Editor-in-Chief. Soon after, people started to take notice of BOOM! with their robust line of kids comics and interesting super hero fare like Waid's own Irredeemable. Earlier this year, BOOM! jumped on the CCO train that swept through the comic book industry and promoted Waid to CCO with Matt Gagnon replacing him as Editor-in-Chief.

After three years in management positions at BOOM!, Mark Waid is stepping down to return to full time freelance comic book writing. He talked to CBR today about his decision to return to writing, his time setting BOOM!'s editorial direction, and what he has planned for the future.

The best news from the interview? He might be stepping down from his management position but he's not leaving BOOM!. Waid will continue to write Irredeemable, Incorruptible and The Traveler.

Comments

  1. Further explains why 15 Minutes with Mark Wade hasn’t had a new episode in quite sometime. (It appears to have been run by BOOM!, and some staff there did the “heavy” lifting aspects of getting each show up, editing, et cetera.)

  2. Hopefully this frees up more time for him to write even more.

  3. So when is he returning to DC?

  4. Awesome. Not that he’s stepping down – he’s clearly done a great job putting Boom on the map – but that hopefully he’ll be writing more. Now DC just has to get him on JLA or Superman and I’d be really happy.

  5. I thought Mark Waid said he was done with mainstream comics forever?

    Guess not.

  6. @TheNextChampion  He did? He just recently had a storyline on ASM.

  7. @TheNextChampion  His comment was directed in a way meaning, that he was done with reading mainstrem comics.

  8. @PotatoPope/Bendrix: Oh right! I’m sorry, he did say ‘reading’ and not writing. My mistake.

  9. As long as Irreedeamble still comes out I’m cool with this
