If you've been paying attention to Chris Samnee's ascending star lately, you'll know the man has serious chops. We've been big fans for a long time, and he's a mainstay in the Weekly Sketch Up feature. Just this week, he was nominated for a Harvey Award, bizarrely in the "Most Promising New Talent" category.
But did you know about Lunch Notes? It's a blog kept by his wife Laura, consisting of all the little notes he would leave in her lunch, or her luggage, or anywhere really. In doing so, he's created a series of cute but sincere cartoons, and showing a completely different side of his art. While it's not a massive double page action spread, what is impressive is the entirely different cartooning language he employs and the remarkable range of his art. One of my favorite things about strip cartooning is the idea that the artist has so few lines, and so little time to convey an emotion, and Samnee does it as well as the best.

D’awwwwww!
the others are cute, but the best one is the first, we’ve all been there too
This is absolutely adorable!
Awesome! I’m 4 weeks away from becoming a father so I can relate to the pregnancy ones.
my wife is due in 9 weeks. i can definitely relate
Thanks so much for posting this, Josh. Fantastic use of line and … well, everything you said.
I just imagined a Scott Pilgrim-style epic in this art style written and drawn by Samnee.
Awww that baby stuff is really adorable 😀
the more i read comics and see how they can be overproduced with photoshop and complex rendering and so on, the more i appreciate simple cartooning like this. The economy of line, and they ability to convey so much in one panel with simple gestural moves. Always brilliant.
These are wonderful. I’ve always loved the “diary/day in the life” approach to comic strips.
@SteenAR: Congrats. Me and my wife are 6 weeks away. The last two hit close to home. 🙂
My first real exposure to his work was Comic Twart and Lunchnotes. A great artist and a great guy.
I kinda hope they release these as a book or something
