Light Week? Try SOLO: THE DELUXE EDITION, ASTRO CITY #1, & DAREDEVIL: DARK NIGHTS #1

A bear there was, a bear, a bear!
All black and brown and covered in hair!
Three boys, a goat, and a dancing bear!
They danced and spun, right to the fair (where they got some comics)!

Solo: The Deluxe Edition HC

By Darwyn Cooke, Jeph Loeb, Brian Azzarello, Richard Corben, Tim Sale, John Arcudi, Howard Chaykin, Mike Allred, Neil Gaiman, Steven T. Seagle, Sergio Aragones, Mark Evanier, Brendan McCarthy, Richard Corben, Paul Pope, Howard, Teddy Kristiansen, Scott Hampton, Damion Scott, & Various

This is one of those series I’ve heard about for years, and never got around to reading. That was dumb. Look at that line up of names, and you’ll see why it’s spoken about with such reverence. The strength of DC characters is that great creators can make magic out of them given the right format, and if you’re missing some of that magic, they’ve packaged it right up for you. So yeah, they’re solo stories of DC characters, in case that wasn’t clear.

Astro City_1

Astro City #1

By Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson, & Alex Ross

One of our all-time favorite comics is back in a new on-going series published by Vertigo and we couldn’t be happier! Chronicling the adventures of the citizens–both super powered and not–of the titular town, Josh once referred to Astro City as “one of the near perfect comics in existence” and he was not wrong to say so. And if that isn’t enough praise, watch the famously gushing video show we did on the series (though if you haven’t read any of the original stories, it’s full of spoilers) to see just how much we love it. Published sporadically over the last 18 years, Astro City has been a labor of love for Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson, and Alex Ross and you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Daredevil: Dark Nights #1

By Lee Weeks & Lee Loughridge

The sensational Lee Weeks spearheads this new anthology series of evergreen Daredevil tales in the vein of Avenging Spider-Man. Except with Daredevil. Not that what Waid and Samnee are doing over in the main title isn’t enough, but with End of Days concluding this week, there’s always room for a little more blind justice. He’s so svelte! That said, I can’t deny that this blizzard plot isn’t a significant motivator in my selection. It was 80 degrees with humidity hovering at 90% when I saw this image! I don’t even think the Atlantic ocean is 90% water!

  1. Ah…the glory days when DC put out things like Solo and Wednesday Comics. Oh where or where has that DC gone?

    • Nowhere, they’re doing the best comix in history right now!!! Don’t tell anyone though cause I don’t think anyone’s noticed yet .

    • Wednesday comics was only a few years ago! If they consistently put out a title like these it would just look like any old anthology, you’d all moan and they wouldn’t try it again for AGES. This way they do it every five years or so, peeps get excited, it gets rave reviews and everyone wins…

    • +1, what they said.

  2. I’ve been reading Astro City since 1998 and can’t wait for this new series from Vertigo to begin. Hopefully it will stay on a monthly schedule this time.

Dardevil: Dark Nights looked good so I pre-ordered that.

The Solo: Deluxe Edition HC looks great but I can’t afford it right now. I did miss out on this series the first time it came out and have always meant to check it out, so maybe down the road.

  3. I’ve been hearing everyone clamoring “Astro City” at my LCS and over the internet but why is it special? What sets it appart from other superhero stories? Why should I read it? Sell it to me iFanfolks!

  4. ASTRO, ASTRO CITY YOU’RE BACK, BACK FOR GOOOOOOOOOOD!
    (Well you better-fucking-be)

  5. Astro City sounds exciting, but my only hesitancy is…will I be totally lost as a new reader coming into this new series? May have to wait for the reviews before jumping on.

    • I asked something along those lines (“If I’ve never read any Astro city would I be completely lost with this new series?”) to Kurt Busiek about 2 months ago on twitter; his answer “nope, not at all”. I added it to my pull list immediately after. 🙂

    • @carlosFF – thanks for the insight – I’m officially adding it to my pull list!

  6. I’ll most likely be picking Astro City this week. The Daredevil book sounds promising (I have always liked Weeks’ art, but didn’t know he was a writer as well); however, due to budget, I’ll be waiting on the series. Solo sounds really good, but, also, well, see previous sentence regarding budget . . .

  7. Nowhere near a light week for me but am gonna pass on about 5 issues I don’t want to cause its time to trim the fat, but I am getting all 3 of these light week recommendations. I’ve always heard and read such good reviews of Solo, along with the creative talent in that book I had to pre-order it…recently noticed there are different covers available too. Astro City!!! A cult classic for superhero fans of superheros that aren’t famous, and then some obviously. DD Dark Knights just had to start the day DD End of Days is ending, a story I love so of course I’m gonna get this when I’m gonna want more and Lee Weeks too.
