Light Week? Try ROCKETEER ADVENTURES 2 #1, SMOKE AND MIRRORS #1, & YOUNG JUSTICE #14

The organizing principle of any society, Mr. Garrison, is for comic books. The authority of the state over its people resides in its comic publishing. Kennedy wanted to end the direct market in his second term. He wanted to call off the con season and cooperate with the digital publishers. He signed a treaty to ban fill-in artists. He refused to invade Cuba in 1962. He set out to withdraw from Vietnam. But all that ended on the 22nd of November, 1963.

Rocketeer Adventures 2 #1

By Peter David, Marc Guggenheim, Sandy Plunkett, Stan Sakai, Bill Sienkiewicz, & Art Adams

The watchword for the last mini-series of Rocketeer Adventures was TALENT. Look at the credits up there, for just the first issue, and tell me they’re not taking that seriously again. Be a fan of the Rocketeer or not, but if you’re rolling the dice based on talent alone, you’re going to come up a winner with this issue. Also, that Darwyn Cooke cover makes young artists pack up their brushes and looking into careers in sales.

Smoke and Mirrors #1

By Mike Costa & Jon Armstrong and Ryan Browne

Who doesn’t love magic? People who don’t like fun, that’s who.  How better to celebrate and have fun with magic than with comic books? And we’re not talking Dr. Strange type magic filled with dreamscapes. No, we’re talking legit, real slight of hand magic and these guys are the real deal.  Mike Costa you know from his great work on G.I. Joe Cobra, but Jon Armstrong is a legit magician and they’ve worked with artist Ryan Browne (God Hates Astronauts) to bring magic to the comic page with this mini-series that’s worth a look!

Young Justice #14

By Kevin Hopps, Gregory David Weisman, & by Chris Jones

The show has been back on for a few weeks now and if you’re watching that but not reading this, what’s your problem? It’s written by writers from the show and, if this kind of thing matters to you, it takes place within the continuity of the show. Featuring mostly one-and-done stories, Young Justice is plain ‘ol just fun all-ages comics, in the same vein as the show.

Comments

  1. Conor, you are so right about Young Justice! Folks, Conor is so right about Young Justice. I enjoy Young Justice the same way I (showing age here) enjoyed a giant bowl of Fruity Pebbles on a Saturday morning romp with Spiderman and His Amazing Friends. It’s just plain and simple fun. No great arcs and strong character developments…just crime, acne, and teen hormones…the show is fun, the comic fun….live action movie or cereal brand next?

    • I will confirm that Young Justice is a tasty giant bowl of Fruity Pebbles! Seriously, folks, if you like the cartoon, you should be reading the comic. It’s fantastic.

  2. Definitely checking out Smoke and Mirrors. “There is a magic trick in every issue!” That’s what it sounded like when Mike Costa was on Word Balloon. We’ll see how it executes. Should be fun. And, it sounds like a really interesting story where magic = science?!?! Could be cool.

  3. That Rocketeer cover is very simple, yet amazing.

  4. I’ve never read the Rocketeer before, any one mind tellin me what it’s all about?
