Light Week? Try CREATOR OWNED HEROES #6, DEADPOOL #1, or BATTLEFIELDS: THE GREEN FIELDS BEYOND #1!

My dear girl, have you ever noticed that the human race is divided into two distinct and irreconcilable groups: those that walk into rooms and automatically read comics, and those that walk into rooms and automatically put comics away. The trouble is that they end up marrying each other.

Creator Owned Heroes #6

By Steve Niles, Jay Russell, Jimmy Palmiotti, & Justin Gray, Andrew Ritchie, Jerry Lando, & Darwyn Cooke

For those of you wondering where creator owned work by Darwyn Cooke, is look no more.  We can’t get enough of Cooke’s work and this issue of the creator owned anthology brings us a rare glimpse of a short story by the modern master. Cooke is joined by those who fly the creator owned flag, packed with comics and bonus material, this is bang for your buck.

Deadpool #1

By Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn, and Tony Moore

Yeah, you heard me. I’m gonna pick up this Deadpool book. The people writing it are very funny, and the guy drawing it is very funny, and obviously very good at drawing. This is a case of creator over character, but even so, I’ve actually enjoyed Deadpool in Uncanny X-Force, so what the hell? Also, the villains are all dead presidents. Tee hee, sirs! Tee hee!

Battlefields: The Green Fields Beyond #1

By Garth Ennis & Carlos Ezquerra

One of my favorite comics over the last five years or so has been the Battlefields series. Garth Ennis’ series of mini-series about various different aspects of World War II has been riveting, emotional, and action-packed. These are stories that Ennis really cares about and it shows on every page. With The Green Fields Beyond we’ve got the last of those minis and I’m as sad as I am excited.

Comments

  1. Josh recommends Deadpool? That’s like Ron buying a Fantomex comic!

Now I have to pick it up

  2. I am 100% with Josh. Creators over character and hoping for the best.

  3. I’ve really enjoyed Garth Ennis’ FURY MAX, but I haven’t read any of the Battlefield minis. Do you think it is possible to pick up ‘The Green Fields Beyond’ and not feel lost?

    • Yes. Absolutely. They’ve all been individual stories.

    • I recently picked up all the previous series at a used book store and absolutely devoured them. I some of the later series had the same characters as previous stories, but it looks like this story is completely new.

    • I think you would be OK picking this one up from the start. It was in my pull folder today, and I had forgotten it was coming out. What a great surprise!

I would totally recommend picking up the previous minis, either in trade or floppies, as Andrew did. These are a great read!

Wasn’t there some news about another Ennis war series coming sometime soon?

    • Just read this on another site: ‘ ”The Green Fields Beyond” will be the third Battlefields go-round for the Sargent Stiles character from the Tankies and The Firefly & His Majesty mini-series.’

So I guess this does tie in, but you still should be able to follow it. Definitely get Tankies and Firefly minis if you can. The dialogue is amazing, accents and everything.

    • Thanks for the responses – I picked it up today and I’m looking forward to giving it a read!

  4. Might give Deadpool a go

  5. People should give Storm Dogs #1 from Image and Shadowman #1 from Valiant a try as well!

  6. Battlefields!!! Ennis and Ezquerra work beautifully together, can’t wait till tomorrow!

  7. Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn, and Tony Moore- change we can believe in.

  8. Had to do a double take there for Josh’s recommendation. Now I know Posehn/Duggan has some work on their hands.

  9. Is creator owned heroes an anthology? is there a trade out of the first 5 issues?
