Light Week? Try Blue Estate #1, Nonplayer #1, or Uncanny X-Men #534.1

Do you trust your choices? Really? There, there. Let us show you another way.

Josh says try:

Blue Estate #1

By Viktor Kalvachev, Andrew Osborn, Nathan Fox, & Toby Cypress

I never heard of this before putting my pull list together, but the title and cover image made me check it out, and then this description made me hit the "pull" button: "On the mean streets of Los Angeles, an alcoholic hit man and a desperate starlet dodge Russian mobsters, Italian gangsters, ninjas, hippies and the L.A.P.D. in a scheme to steal millions from a psychotic action movie hero". If that doesn't do it for you, I don't know what to tell you, but it's exactly the kind of thing I want to be good. Plus…. Nathan Fox! Always a bonus.

Ron says try:

Nonplayer #1

By Nate Simpson

Coming out of this month of comic cons (Emerald City, C2E2 and Wonder Con), Nonplayer had the largest amount of noticable buzz.  I was able to score a copy at WonderCon this past weekend and trust me, all the hype is totally true.  Nate Simpson has created both a compelling story pulling in elements of cyberpunk and gaming along with some of the most breathtaking art you've ever seen.  Don't miss out on this book, grab the first issue while you can because I'm betting this is going to be another hit for Image.

Conor says try:

Uncanny X-Men #534.1

By Kieron Gillen, Carlos Pacheco, & Frank D'Armata

I'm a lapsed and conflicted X-fan. Up until the mid-1990s I was a pretty big X-book reader, but shortly after Chris Claremont and Jim Lee launched X-Men and then left the book not long after I started to lose interest as the stories seemed to get more convoluted and the line of books morphed into something I could no longer relate to. But every once in a while, I miss Marvels Merry Mutants, and I've been enjoying X-Men and I like Kieron Gillen's work, and so I figure that this Point One issue is a good time for my periodic check-in with Uncanny X-Men. I mean, that's the point of these Point One books, right? To get new readers lapsed readers to pick up these books?

Comments

  1. Well, unlike some other books, Uncanny’s .1 issue won’t be released mid-arc, so maybe it’ll actually servce its purpose.

  2. I hope my LCS has non player. thaat is some great art!

  3. What was your fav out of the three Conor? How was Blue Estate?

  4. Wait Conor, now I’m confused. So is it for new readers or lapsed readers? I’ve never even tried em due to Josh and your constant heckling of Ron on the show in regards to his X-Reading.

  5. @MadMartigan  It’s mostly for lapsed readers, so I’d probably read this with wikipedia on hand.

  6. I’m interested in Uncanny solely to see how Carlos Pacheco draws the x-men

  7. Nonplayer is something i’m very interested in. Been checking in on Nates blog for a while now and i totally forgot about it…hope i can find it at an LCS.

I’m tempted byUncanny (was practically in the same boat as Conor), but i still think i’ll be lost.

  8. Nonplayer and Blue Estate are definitely on my radar for when they come out in trade

  9. For the first time in like, god 2 years now?, I want to read an issue of Uncanny X-Men. Cause even though I hate the .1 idea the preview for Uncanny this week looked really fun. Magneto trying to fix his image? That can go in any direction.

  10. I’ll be trade waiting for Nonplayer, the guy is still writing issue 2.  If Image and the Author both have no clue when 2 will be coming out, I know at least my LCS won’t be pushing it too hard.

  11. @Jordan0061  I’m not sure what you mean. Of these three? I haven’t read them yet – they come out tomorrow.

@MadMartigan  That was a joke about that Marvel says the Point One books are for and what I think they are actually for. I’m sure you can pick this up and read it with only a rudimentary undertsanding of the X-Men.

  12. @PotatoPope  –Simpson said in an interview that he was halfway through drawing issue 2….at any rate it’ll still be a while.

  13. I picked up both Blue Estate and Nonplayer at Wondercon. Both gorgeous. Haven’t read Blue Estate yet, but I enjoyed Nonplayer.

Blue Estate is really interesting artistically, as there are a number of artists all delving into different flashbacks, but it stil all works together pretty well.

  14. I’m buying Uncanny too because a Magneto focused issue looks awesome.

  15. So excited for Nonplayer.

  16. Cool!  I first saw both Nonplayer and Blue Estate when I was putting my pull list together last night as well.  The art on both looks AWESOME!

  17. @AlanRob  So…”Cool” and “Awesome” in the same two line post?  What a douche.

  18. Nonplayer is phenomenal!  AND Nate Simpson is one of the most humble creators I met at WonderCon.  Oh yeah, Nonplayer turned my wife’s attention away from pining for the next Mouse Guard and actually reading other comics.

Undying Love is also a great title if your LCS still has it in stock.
