Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, and Dan Duncan To Bring The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Back To Comics

Today, IDW Publishing and Nickelodeon announced the creative team that will bring everyones' favorite pizza eating amphibious adolescent ninjas back to comics when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 hits stores in August 2011!

Radical!

(Sorry.)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman will help steer the new book as the co-writer alongside Tom Waltz (Silent Hill: Part Life) and by providing layouts for artist Dan Duncan and by drawing the variant covers. Regular covers for the first two issues will be drawn by two dudes named Sam Keith and Walter Simonson.

The first story arc will re-tell the origin story of the Turtles and will introduce a new villain, Old Hob who is described as a fearsome mutant alley cat. Alley cats are fearsome enough without being mutants too. You can also expect all of your old favorites in the cast, including Master Splinter, April O’Neill, and my personal favorite, Casey Jones.

Near-ubiquitous in American pop-culture in the late 80s and early 90s, starring in comics, a cartoon, a series of films, and an awesome line of toys, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is one of the most successful indie comics properties of all-time.

  1. Awesome.  I recently introduced my daughters to the turtles and they can’t get enough of them.  Of course, if these are as violent as the originals I’ll have to keep them to myself.

  2. woohoo!  TMNT and Ghostbusters were my favorite things in the world when I was a kid…  Hoping IDW and the writers/artists do a better job with Turtles than with the Ghostbusters comics IDW has been releasing…

  3. Down!

  4. Huge opportunity for Waltz and Duncan.  I hope they nail it, or IDW editorial may have made a big misstep.  But lets be optimistic!

  5. Fuckin A.

  6. I so totally SHELL SHOCKED right now, dudes!!!

  7. Very intersting!  Good TMNT fans know that the other co-creator Peter Laird has been steering the U.S.S. Cowabunga for the last couple decades (after he bought out the rights from Kevin Eastman).  I’ve gotten used to Laird’s oversight, and I’m sure for many fans his take has become synonymous with the Turtles.  It will be interesting to see if Kevin Eastman’s input will be recognizable as the unique other half of “the original flavor.”

And Sam Keith drawing the Turtles?  Where can I pre-order the lithograph?!

Casey Jones is gonna run this town!

  9. Want.

It’s all about the Bebop & Rocksteady.

  10. sounds good to me

  11. About time!

  12. Wow, that art takes me back to 1988. See you in August, dudes!

  13. Please don’t suck, please don’t suck, please don’t suck.

Sam Keith drawing the Turtles just made my pants a little tight.

  14. It is very cool that Eastman is involved.  I’m still holding out hope that Laird will finish Volume 4 some day.  Never going to happen… but I would love it.  Volume four was fantastic when read all at once.  I didn’t start reading it until close to #20 and then caught up in a weekend.  It was great.  Unfortunately, it took like four years for those issues to come out.

  15. So is this a reboot? I thought Paul said in the last article that it would be part of the old series.

  16. @Suicidalkangarooz  Where does it say it is a reboot?

  17. I’m just happy they’ll be putting out beautiful IDW hardcovers of the first series all the way through City at War.  Giddy!

@Suicidalkangarooz  They’re reprinting some of the old material alongside the new stuff. That might be the confusion.

  19. @PaulMontgomery  Thanks. That makes sense. @conor  I just thought since they are spending an entire story arc on the origin that it is going to be a reboot. The only thing they need to fix about this relaunch is changing the turtle’s mask colors. I’m really surprised they didn’t use that since the show did.

  20. @Suicidalkangarooz  Re-telling the origin makes sense if you’re trying to get new readers up to speed with a book and characters that haven’t been around in a while. Doesn’t mean it’s a reboot. Origins get re-told all the time. We’ll see.

Keeping the masks all red is a huge plus in my book.

  21. Nice, always wanted to read some of the turtles comics.

  22. @conor  I guess it will be okay as long as their skin colors don’t look too similiar. In the pic above it looks okay, but I would imagine that having all red masks would just make it harder to differentiate them.

  23. @Suicidalkangarooz  That is what the weapons are for!  😉

  24. As long as they’re nice and dark and brooding like the original series — then we’ll be set.

  25. I’d like a Ninja Turtle/Usagi Yojimbo/Ogami Itto crossover.

  26. Wasn’t the radioactive canister that mutated the turtles hinted at as being the same radioactive canister that blinded Matt Murdock and turned him into Daredevil?

  27. So who’s publishing it? Isn’t mirage nicktoons now?

  28. @ShadowstarBlu  That information is literally the second and third words of the article.

  29. @JohnVFerrigno

Yes, Laird and Eastmen were high influenced by Miller’s run on DD,  Stick = Splinter, Hand = Foot…  I’m still waiting for the DD/TMNT/X-Men crossover…

  30. Did they officially say they were reprinting the whole original series?  I remember them saying some reprints are coming, I didn’t think they said the whole series, though.  I really hope they do.

  31. ECLECTIC!

Also, Sam Keith should just be given a separate “Turtles” mini-series.  And a puppy.

  32. you know, i think i’m ready to move on

  33. I want to be reading this now. 😀

My favorite is Michelangelo. He, like me, is a party dude.

This will almost certainly be on my pull list.

  35. I have never read any of the original TMNT comics, but I hear nothing but raves about them.

  36. will it be black and white?

  37. I was passingly thinking about looking at this but the name Sam Keith makes it a MUST HAVE. I hope it’s in black and white but if it’s in color I can get used to it…I’ve finally gotten used to The Tick being in color.

  38. I never really read much of the comics but I loved the cartoon and movies as a kid. Does anyone know if there’s any trades I could possibly order to check out the comics and if so where a good place to start would be?

  39. I am so down for this.  Consider it on my Pull- list.  I just hope they don’t kill off Shredder in the first arc.  I want Shredder to be rowdy in this.

  40. Can’t wait. Not quite as good as vol.4 being brought to an end, but still very cool
